New Low-Budget Airline: The Africa Transporter, LLC
1. Introduction
Africa is a continent of 54 countries and more
than one billion residents. In most countries,
its middle class has reached or exceeded 50%
of the country’s total population, and of those,
over 70% are under the age of 30. This group
of people has the financial means and the
desire to travel to locations that are often not
or very difficult to reach by the still often
inadequate road system in their country.
One of the most significant hindrances to the
African renaissance is the poor concentration of
air travel possibilities; effectively hindering
business opportunities, limiting the ease of
intra regional and intra African business
networking thereby aligning the continent more
to the West or East since travel possibilities
between the West or East are readily available
and affordable.
Our objective is to offer low-cost no-fringe
intra-regional flights between cities, on a daily
or bi-daily basis, depending on demand. In the
second phase, we will expand the regional flight
plan to other regions in Africa, considering that
Africa consists of four regions – North, South,
West and East.
Commercially, many products cannot be
shipped in a timely manner from the
manufacturer to the client or from the seller to
the buyer between cities and countries. This
lack of transportation infrastructure is
strangling any efforts of establishing successful
businesses or new entrepreneurial ventures.
The Africa Transporter
… aims at improving the national air
transportation grid among cities within West
Africa, and will soon expand service to major
cities of other regional blocks. With ample
demand and little supply, the grounds for a
successful business venture are there to be
taken.
Our strategy also aims at becoming a ‘feed-in’
airline for major inter-continental airlines, such
as e.g. Air France/KLM, British Airways, Delta
etc., or South African Airways, the Continent’s
major international airline. These airlines fly to
large cities in Ghana, Nigeria or Senegal, but
usually skip all or most of the capital cities of
other West African countries. If we can deliver
these international air carriers with additional
passengers from ‘uncovered’ West African
countries, a successful collaborative venture
could easily be established.
Flight Routes
Our Budget Airline is intended to serve
neighboring capitals and serve as a ‘feed-in’
provider for passengers to international air
carriers in West Africa.
Since we are flying ‘from city to city’, flight
distances will not exceed 500 miles or one hour
of flying time between individual cities/airports,
allowing for three-city or even four-city round
trip schedules:
Three city schedule: City A City B City C
City D back to City C City B City A
total turnaround time is 12 hrs.
Four city schedule: City A City B City C
City D City E – and back to City D City C
City B City A
Total turnaround time is 16 hrs.
We are planning to use two Boeing 737-600
airplanes with a maximum seat capacity of 132
seats in a one class configuration, in addition to
one Boeing 737-4F cargo plane.
The following table will list the potential costs
per seat after the six months introductory
period and subsequent increased demand for
our budget services, listing the per seat costs
for 80% and 100% full capacity flights:
Schedule Cost/Seat
80%/105
Seats
Cost/Seat
100%/132
Seats
2-Cities/Day $ 42.75 $ 34.01
3-Cities/Day $ 38.98 $ 31.00
4-Cities/Day $ 37.09 $ 29.50
(Costs that are not considered in the above prices are the
one-time registration fee per country of $ 19,000, local
airport fees and taxes.)
The next table lists the number of passengers
carried in 2015 (according to World Bank data)
in West Africa, compared to the region’s total
population.

WEST

Of Population
Total passenger traffic in West Africa was only
about 1.54% of the region’s total population, as
compared to almost 250% passenger-to-
population air traffic in the USA. Considering
that West Africa has a 20% larger population
than the USA, it is obvious that there is a huge
potential for creating demand and developing
successful airline ventures with little downside
risk.
