“It’s a Beautiful Day for Football!!”
Oregon
“The trip to Oregon was very unexpected but so fun! I got the call
in class and within hours was on a plane. I was exhausted but the
experience was so exciting. Aside from being apart of College
Game Day and the game itself, the memories and jokes I made
with my team members and coach mad the sleep deprivation so
worth it! I’d jump on a plane in a heartbeat and do it all over
again. Knowing that we weren’t originally part of the plan to be in
Oregon and that Spartan Nation made this trip happen for us
made this trip more than important to me, knowing that we
have so much support from our community is heartwarming!”
-Alexa Brewer
Homecoming
“This is always one of my most favorite time of the season, having
all the alumni come back! I love being able to share the field with
some of my old teammates and alumni; being able to do what we
all love best together. I love hearing all the stories from our alumni
about their time in the program and to see how each and every one
of them shaped it.” –Tracy NG
Senior Day (Rutgers)
“This was probably one of my most emotional games that I had
during my four years on the team. It was hard to believe that, that
day was the last time I will be walking into Spartan Stadium as a
MSU cheerleader and being on the sideline cheering along with
all of Spartan Nation. But I wouldn’t change it for anything; I’m
glad I was able to share this moment with my teammates that
came along this journey with me four years ago. Kissing the
Spartan head after the game was bitter sweet.” –Tracy NG
Cotton Bowl
“The Cotton Bowl was such a fun experience. We got to be
a part of so many awesome events that helped our fans get
ready for the big game. As a team we spent our down time
just being silly. On New Year’s Eve, for example, we
counted down and dropped an apple because we missed
the televised ball drop. On game day we got serious, and it
was definitely a once and a lifetime experience. The come
behind win in the fourth quarter was very exciting for us all.
Standing out on the 50-yard line was so surreal with all the
confetti falling around us.”

“Volleyball was a super fun experience because it was
something I had never done before. The atmosphere at
the games was awesome and to be able to get the fans
up and cheering was a lot of fun. The games get really
intense and always leave me excited to cheer the girls on
again!” -Olivia Valley
“Cheering for the MSU women’s volleyball team was a great
experience. There is a lot of interaction with the fans that
you don’t get with other sports and made the experience that
much better. My favorite part was the t-shirt toss after the
second game of the day. Everyone was gets really excited
trying to win a shirt!”

Basketball Season
In season
“Being able to cheer on the court at basketball games is an
amazing opportunity. It is a great feeling to stand on the court
representing Michigan State, and uniting with the Izzone to
cheer on our Spartans to victory! One of my favorite
memories from this season was cheering the Ohio State game!
The energy in the Breslin was just unbelievable. Definitely
one of those games you never forget!” –Hannah Wojcik
Big Ten Tourney
“This year I got the chance to go to both women’s and
men’s Big Ten Tourney. I can say that I definitely got more
than I expected from both teams. It’s always
amazing to see our teams fight for what they want;
our Women’s basketball beating Michigan and our
Men’s basketball fighting all the way to the
championship. There’s no better way to spend
spring break than to be on the sideline supporting
our Spartan Family!” – Timmy Covey
Round One
“As I round out my third year as an MSU cheerleader, I
would say that the first round of the NCAA tournament
in Charlotte, NC was one of my favorite trips. My
experience was filled with amazing hospitality,
enthusiastic Spartan fans from all over the U.S. and some
pretty great basketball! I was truly honored to stand up
with Spartan Nation and cheer on our extremely talented
basketball team. The experience really reminded me what
it means to be a Spartan!” – Hayley DiGianni
Sweet Sixteen/ Elite Eight
“My experience at the Sweet 16 and Elite 8 was the best trip
I’ve been blessed with thus far in my cheer career. In
addition to the great location of Syracuse, NY, what made
the trip was the resilience of our men’s basketball team. I
had tons of fun cheering our team to victory and I’m
especially proud that they were able to uphold our
university’s motto, of Spartan’s Will.” –Charlton Dixon

Season Overall
Final Four
“The Final Four was the icing on the cake for my final
year of cheerleading. I had already been able to
represent MSU as a cheerleader at various events, so it
was such an honor to be able to put on my uniform for
my team one last time. I will never forget the
experiences that I was able to have in Indianapolis and
am truly grateful for all the opportunities that have
came along. I will never forget the excitement and
being able to cheer along side the Izzone one last time as they
made their way down to Indy!” –Jake Nave
“When I started at MSU I was concerned about leaving my
friends and family and worried about going to such a big
University and not feeling connected. Making the cheer team
gave me the opportunity to get connected and have an instant
“family” and friends. Having not grown up with any brothers or
not being involved with any coed sports team in the past, I have
come to enjoy how the guys on the team are able to work hard
when needed but then lighten the atmosphere and goof off at
other times. I have appreciated how the girls on the team have
helped lead me to understand what it means to be a college
cheerleader. Being on the team is more than the experience and
opportunities it presents, but the second family that also comes
along with it!” –Jenna White
“My first year on the team was like
nothing I could’ve imagined. I had
no intention of joining the cheer team
when I came to MSU but I’m
extremely glad I did! The team
means a lot to me because of how
close we all are and how I’ve became
friends with the team. It’s mad my
first year of college a great experience
and I especially look forward to
cheering on all Spartan Athletics in
the future and to create many more
memories.” –Tyler Williamson
“Michigan State Cheerleading means the world to me. It allows me to support the school I love, and the
sports I love. It allows me to travel around the country, as a representative of MSU. It allows me to have
amazing teammates, with whom I’ve grown to have great friendships. As an incoming senior, I’ve
begun to look back at my experiences at MSU. And, all of those from cheerleading are the most
memorable. I’m blessed to be a Spartan cheerleader and my college years wouldn’t be nearly as great
without the influences of this team!” –Jewel Hampton

Looking a little deeper into a first and last year
“This year completes my fourth and final year as a Michigan State cheerleader. I cannot
say how blessed and honor that I am to be apart of such an amazing program these past
four years. Cheering at Michigan State did not just offer me many amazing opportunities,
but also life lessons and friendships that will last me a lifetime. I don’t think I will ever
forget the feeling of walking into Spartan Stadium for the very first time my freshman year.
I’m glad that during my four years at Michigan State University I was able to do all that I
could do to support Michigan State in all different aspects, whether it was representing the
face of Michigan State or cheering on our various sporting teams. These four years has
shaped me into the person that I am today as I graduate from Michigan State and has given
me endless memories that no money can even buy. The most important thing that I am
leaving with from this program is the family and all the friendship that came along with it!
Go Green!”
-Tracy NG
“My first year as a member of the Michigan State Cheer team was one filled with
many first time and great opportunities and experiences. Growing up as a football
player and wrestler I had always been the one on the field or court and wasn’t
supposed to pay attention to the people cheering during the game. Becoming a
cheerleader changed that. I got to experience first hand the effort and passion that
goes into getting the crowd into the games and helping our teams on to victory.
Learning from my team through the year showed me all the things that go into a year
as a cheerleader and it introduced me to some of my closest friends that I have ever
meant since starting at MSU. I got the great opportunities to travel to games like the
MSU vs IU football game and the second round of the March Madness tournament.
Both were events that first years on the team don’t usually get the chance to
participate in. I was extremely grateful to my coach and my team for those chances. I
am looking forward to my second year on the team and all the new experiences that I
will have with a year of experience under my belt. It is a great time to be a Spartan.
GO GREEN!”
-Leland Williamson
“As a first year on the MSU Cheerleading Team, and a junior at MSU, I can say that
cheer has completed my experience here. It was the most stressful year, trying to balance
events, games and practices on top of schoolwork and a job, but it is definitely all worth
it! There are so many awesome experiences and friendships you create while representing
this school. As a first year, you cheer at lots of Volleyball games, which is a lot of fun and
prepares you for what is expected at football and basketball games. My favorite part of
Volleyball games is the fans because they are interactive with us and the atmosphere is
always exciting. I was given the “Rookie of the Year” award at our banquet, which really
means a lot to me. This team cheers each other on and encourages everyone to be their
best. I’m looking forward to more Championship and Bowl games this year, and also to
finish my senior year strong, on and off of the sidelines!”
-Katy Thiel
My freshman year I originally had the intentions of trying out for Sparty, but was asked by my
sister and others to try out for a section in the Spartan Marching Band, which I made it past
auditions and became a member of the band. I also knew that there was a girl on the cheer
team from my high school and so at a school event I seeked her out to say hello, tried out
some basic stunts on the field there and got hooked. I then attended each practice the whole
rest of the semester and the spring semester, learning a lot from all the members who worked
with me. The transition from one organization to another was easy in some ways and difficult
in some other ways. It was easy in the sense that I was still able to be a part of our program
that supported our athletics and represented our school, and it was something very new to me
that I enjoyed. It was difficult however to have to change from seeing all of my new friends in
the band on a regular basis and to leave some of the traditions and performance aspects that I
had in the band behind. Cheerleading to me was a new way to test myself. I constantly tried
7. Coach Elyse
This has been a whirlwind to say the least; I have enjoyed the team
members, the games, the fans and alumni more than ever this year.
Watching the support for our teams that were up this year (Football
& Men’s Basketball) and even for the teams that may have struggled
(Women’s Volleyball & Basketball) has been energizing to both our
cheerleaders and myself! ?
Our team had a large amount of first year members who
really stepped up to plate to make sure games and events went
smoothly. We had a total of 15 first year members, which is half of
our team! As we transition into next year the second class is
motivated to build their skills in both stunting and tumbling.
Our veterans did an amazing job of setting an example, when
your leaders are responsible and reliable the year is very enjoyable! A
sad but hopeful good bye for the seniors leaving us is in order as I wish
them well on their next path.
One final good-bye is to my Assistant Coach Tracy Dean
who retired after 25 years in coaching at all levels and styles, she was a
great asset to myself and the team.
For you, alumni, I want to extend an open invitation to stop
by and visit the team whenever you are in town. The current members
of the team would love to get know you all and here your stories and
tips on how to carry on the MSU Cheerleading traditions!
