WEST TEXAS A&M
COMING UP
#4 West Texas A&M hosts Lubbock Christian in their 2018-19 home opener on
Thursday, Nov. 15, at the First United Bank Center in Canyon, Texas. Tipoff is set
for 7 p.m.
Thursday’s game will be the first of two meetings between programs this season
with the Buffs making the return trip to Lubbock on Dec. 5.
A LOOK BACK AT THE WEEKEND
Ryan Quaid averaged 23.0 points and 13.5 rebounds as West Texas A&M went
1-1 on their trip to Colorado this past weekend. After dropping a 77-72 contest to
Western State in Colorado, the Buffs regrouped to blow out Adams State 112-87
in a game where they made a season-high 15 three-pointers.
In Friday’s contest against the Mountaineers, Quaid had his second 17-point, 18
rebound performance of the season as WT were unable to overcome a 17-point
first half deficit. The senior recorded the same score line in WT’s season opening
win over Drury at the D2CCA TipOff Classic. Joel Murray had his best offensive
performance of the young season with 15 points going 5-of-10 from the floor.
Fellow freshman Qua Grant also reached double figures with 11 points.
It was a different story on Saturday in Alamosa as the Buffs shot 54.3% from the
floor and 41.7% from three-point range as they reached the 100-point plateau
for the first time of the season. Quaid and Grant had a game-high 23 points as
the senior went a season-high 9-of-16 from the floor while pulling down nine
rebounds. Sterling White, making his first appearance of the season, had nine
points going 3-of-4 from beyond the arc.
Another reason for the scoring output for the Buffs came from the 21 assists, 12 of
those coming from Drew Evans and Jordan Collins. The two junior guards set a
career-high with six assists each.
WT HEAD COACH TOM BROWN
Fifth-year head coach Tom Brown won his 100th game at the helm of WT
basketball in Saturday’s 112-87 win over Adams State in Alamosa, Colo. It took
him 136 to reach the plateau making him the fastest coach to eclipse the 100
win mark. The 2017-18 Lone Star Conference Coach of the Year has the fifth-best
winning percentage in program history at 73.5%.
STATISTICALLY SPEAKING
The Buffs enter the weekend averaging 76.4 points per game, 12 points less than
last year. Before scoring 112 points on Saturday, WT had failed to score more than
80 points in four straight games for the first time under Tom Brown.
WT’s 112 points in the win over Adams State was a season-high, marking their first
time over 100 points this season. During the 2018-19 season, the Buffs reached
the 100-point plateau four times against Division II opponents with two of those
coming against UT Permian Basin.
Preseason All-American Ryan Quaid has had a great start to his season
averaging 15.2 points and 11.0 rebounds per game while shooting 47.5% from
the floor. The Fort Collins, Colo. native has scored in double figures four times
including a season-high 23 points against ASU on Saturday. He needs just 22
more rebounds to break Reggie Ramsey’s career rebound record of 790.

Tom Brown was hired on April 16, 2014, as the 17th head
coach in West Texas A&M men’s basketball history. He is 95-36
in his four years at WT following the 26-9 season in 2016-17.
Not only have the Buffs excelled on the court in Brown’s
three years at WT, but also in the classroom as the team has
set new team standards for the program recording the highest
grade-point average in men’s basketball program history each
of the years he has been at WT.
WT had a banner year in 2017-18 winning the Lone Star
Conference Regular Season, Tournament and South Central
Regional Championship en route to the NCAA Elite Eight where
they lost to eventual National Champion, Ferris State. The Buffs
finshed 32-4 overall in a season that saw David Chavlovich
break the LSC record for most points scored in a career.
In his third season at WT, Brown guided the Buffs to their
first Sweet Sixteen since 1997-98 and the 26 wins by the Buffs
were the most since the 1997-98 season, which saw WT reach
the Elite Eight. WT won 25 NCAA Division II games in 2016-17,
marking the most Division II wins in a season and the 26 overall
wins ties for fourth-most in program history. Brown has guided
the Buffs to three-straight winning seasons and back-to-back
20-plus win seasons.
Brown inherited a WT program coming off a 10-17 campaign
in 2013-14 taking three seniors and a walk on, while recording
one of the best turnarounds in NCAA Division II in 2014-15,
going 17-12 and 7-7 in Lone Star Conference play after the Buffs
won just two league games the season before. Brown guided
the team to a fifth-place league finish in his inaugural campaign.
Senior Miles Gatewood earned honorable mention all-confer-
ence honors, senior Tez Dumars surpassed Maurice Cheeks in
career scoring finishing fourth all-time in points scored, while
senior Antjuan Ball was honored on the LSC All-Defensive Team.
Freshman and Brown’s recruit, David Chavlovich, began his
storied career leading the team in scoring, earning second team
all-conference honors and LSC Freshman of the Year accolades,
averaging 16.5 points to go along with 93 assists and 30 steals.
In his second season, Brown and the Buffs continued their
upward ascent both regionally and nationally in 2015-16. Brown
guided the Buffs to a 21-10 season, marking the team’s first 20-
plus win season since 2010-11. WT finished second in the Lone
Star Conference, marking the highest finish for the program
since the LSC moved away from divisions. Chavlovich earned
NABC All-America honors, named LSC Player of the Year honors
and sophomore Jordan Evans received honorable mention all-
league honors in his first playing season.
This past season, Brown guided the team to the 26-9 record
with six wins over ranked teams as the Buffs were ranked as
high as 11th nationally during the season. WT won two NCAA
South Central Region Tournament games for the first time since
1997-98, reaching the postseason for the first time since 2011-12
and making the program’s 14th overall appearance. Chavlovich
earned first team all-conference honors for the third-straight
year, while Evans earned second team honors, senior Eric
Golightly, Jr., and sophomore Ryan Quaid were named to the
LSC All-Academic Team. Under Brown’s guidance, Chavlovich
became the program’s all-time leading scorer for the Buffs
with 1,762 career points as he surpassed former Buff Martin
Lattibeaudiere (1993-97) with 1,566 points.
Prior to West Texas A&M, Brown was the Associate Head
Coach and recruiting coordinator at NCAA Division II power
Winona State University in Winona, Min. While at Winona State,
Brown helped lead the Warriors to the NCAA Division II National
Championship in 2006 and 2008 and finished as a national
finalist in 2007. During that time, Winona State posted an
unprecedented 105-6 record.
During Brown’s time at WSU, the Warriors went to the NCAA
