• With an average annual growth rate of 3.2%, amongst the largest in the world – Uganda’s
population is expected to increase to 44 Mn by 2020
• Total Fertility Rate (TFR) of 6.7 births/woman and a contraceptive prevalence rate of 24%
both contribute significantly to the increase in Uganda’s population
• Life expectancy at birth is around 52 years
• HIV prevalence has reduced from more than 30% in the 1980s to 6.4% by the end of 2008
• Infant mortality rate was at 79 per 1,000 live births in 2005
• Hospital bed density of 0.39 beds per 1,000 population
