3. Introduction, Background, Justification
• Teaching of Technical English in Technical High Schools
• Program developed by MEP
• Demand of content
• Lacking of proper training or materials
• Benefit for current and future teachers and students
5. Objectives
GENERAL OBJECTIVE
• To enhance the level of English language competence of the
students through the design and implementation of the
Manual for the Learning Process of Technical English for the
Automotive Mechanics Specialty for Eleventh Graders at
Ciudad de los Niños – San Agustín Technical High School
Cartago
6. Objectives
SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES
• To diagnose the English level that students of eleventh grade of the
specialty of Automotive Mechanics have
• To design a Manual for the Learning Process of Automotive
Mechanics
• To apply a Manual for the Learning Process of Automotive
Mechanics
• To determine the effect that working with the manual will have on
the level of proficiency of students
8. Hypothesis
• The implementation of a Manual in a Technical English
Course in the field of Automotive Mechanics will facilitate the
teaching process of the instructor and it will improve the
performance of the students as well.

22. Designing and Implementing the Manual
PARTS OF THE MANUAL
• Internal and External Parts of the Vehicle (Example)
• Car Accessories
• Car Tools
• Auto Maintanance
• Safety and Emergency Procedures
27. • DEFINITIONS:
Spark plug: electric device whose two electrodes produce the spark necessary
to ignite the air / fuel mixture in the cylinder.
Rocker arm: lever, activated by the camshaft that drives the inlet and exhaust
valves to open them.
Piston: metal moving part in the cylinder and attached to the connecting rod; it
compresses the air/fuel mixture and then receives the thrust from the burned
gases.
Engine block: main engine casing, which encloses the cylinders.
Exhaust valve: part that opens to allow the burned gases to escape.
Oil pan gasket: packing providing the seal between the oil pan and the engine
block.
Crankshaft: shaft consisting of a series of cranks, which convert the alternate
rectilinear motion of the piston/connecting-rod assembly into a continuous
circular motion.
Connecting rod: piston to the crankshaft.
Piston skirt: side surface of a piston guiding it along the inside of the cylinder.
Piston ring: circular ring mounted on the piston providing a seal between it and
the cylinder.
Combustion chamber: part of the cylinder in which the pressurized air/fuel
mixture is ignited and burned.
Inlet valve: part that opens to let the air/fuel mixture into the cylinder.
Camshaft: axle driven by a belt, a chain or gears connected to the crankshaft,
controlling the opening and closing of the valves.
Timing belt: strap connecting the crankshaft to the camshaft.
Valve spring: spring that brings the valve back into the closed position.
Intake manifold: passages through which the air/fuel mixture enters the
cylinder.
Fuel injector: device pulverizing the fuel in the combustion chamber.
28. • Practice
Match the definitions of column A with the corresponding words of column B.
Column A Column B
Casing that encloses the cylinder ( ) a. piston ring
Brings the valve back into the closed position ( ) b. piston
Pulverizes the fuel in the combustion chamber ( ) c. spark plug
Piston to the crankshaft ( ) d. valve spring
Compresses the air/fuel mixture ( ) e. connecting rod
Controls the opening and closing of the valves ( ) f. timing belt
Produces the spark to ignite the air/fuel mixture ( ) g. engine block
Pack providing the seal ( ) h. oil pan gasket
Circular ring mounted on the piston ( ) i. camshaft
Connects the crankshaft to the camshaft ( ) j. fuel injector
