2. tomorrow hasn’t looked like today during
any of our lifetimes … not once
change is the solitary constant
so … what’s next?
if you look into the future and
see the present … you’re wrong
@docjamesw
3. what will the future look like?
what technology will it require?
will you meet the future or spend
the next decade chasing it?
@docjamesw
the future is a disruption of the present
the present is a disruption of the past

14. perhaps …
we weren’t meant to go to heaven but
instead to create heaven for ourselves
the meaning of life isn’t something given
to us by a higher power but something we
claim as we evolve into that higher power
@docjamesw
15. god, it is said, created us in his own image,
but through our magic machines it seems
more likely we will create god in ours

Editor's Notes
Change is coming. Its bigger than the change brought by the PC. Bigger than the web. Bigger than search. Bigger than social networking. But it has something in common with each of these. Those who anticipate it will thrive.
The future may be uncertain but it is guaranteed to be different than the present. Which is very good news to Microsoft because if any of us is enjoying the present too much it can only be because we are overpaid.
Personal success does not mean company success and by the time we get to the end of this presentation I am going to make the argument that the world needs Microsoft to step up and win the future.
The world of IBM that we disrupted was one of exclusivity to business and elite programmers. We opened the world of computing to the masses. Democratizing programming and brought computers into homes.
But we failed to grasp our own disruption by the web. Confident in our ability to out develop browser companies and game console companies we forged ahead in web services and mobile but failed to understand the sheer importance of Search and the emerging E-commerce marketplace. Everything, it turns out, is not a Windows app.
Perhaps it is incumbency that really is the problem because Google failed to grasp mobile as they were busy monetizing the web. But their reaction to that loss was swift, showing, I believe an exemplary growth mindset. Search became more app-like and they double-downed on Android making them a significant player in the mobile era.
