COLLEGE OF SOUTHERN MARYLAND • Our first attempt using open educational resources came by way of an adjunct. • She has taught for CSM for 5 years. • She used Expert TA (Homework and Tests) and the Open Stax content. • We are using the open resources in advertising for admissions • The course was Quality Matters reviewed and met standards

OER Impact Research Summer/Fall 2013 • Use of OER leads to critical reflection with evidence of improvement in practice. • Participation in OER pilots leads to policy change at institutional level. • Open education models lead to more equitable access to education • OER adoption at institutional level leads to financial benefits for students and/or institutions

OER Impact Research Respondent demographics & headlines • 136 faculty at community colleges • 95% have Masters degree or greater • 72% taught over 10 years • Most Popular OER – 71% YouTube, 43% TED talks, 35% iTunes • OER is shared by – 56% email, 46% in-person • 22% didn’t recognize Creative Commons logo • 15% recognized but not sure what it meant

OER Impact Research Student Benefits & Challenges • 50% Positive effect e.g. – increasing enthusiasm for study, – range of interest; – learner autonomy; – improved participation and collaboration; – confidence. • 16% OER increases retention. Factors include: – > 50% reduced cost of materials increases – Next popular: flexible use & ease of access anytime. – Little or no support for linguistic or cultural relevance.

OER Impact Research Teaching Benefits • General agreement OER enhances teaching – 66% curriculum coverage, – 77% range of methodology, – 76% range of media, – 63% currency of subject knowledge • Most popular statement was that OER means you don’t have to do it all yourself. • No general agreement that OER leads to increased collaboration or improved ICT skills. • 66% OER leads to increased teacher reflection

OER Impact Research Teaching Challenges • Challenges to OER usage – 46% relevance – 43% quality • 58% Reputable institution or personal recommendation factor in choosing OER • 11% identified lack of institutional support as an issue. • 48% thought CC licensing was factor in choosing OER. Later 75% thought it important Open licensing perceptions seem to be contextual and ambiguous.

You can use the icons underneath this window to:Raise your hand if you have a question or comment and you wish to speakThere are also happy and sad faces and an applaud icon Below the Participants window is the Chat window to the center-left of this screen where you can type a question or comment into the box at any time. You can also send a private message to another participant at any time, but please be aware that moderators can see all private messages.Below the chat area is the Audio window in the bottom left of the screen. Click on the raised your hand button to let us know you would like to speak. You can use a head set or your phone for audio chat. If you are using a microphone and have been recognized to speak, Click the button with the microphone on it and begin speaking. Remember to click the button again when you finish speaking so that someone else can have a turn. You can control your mic and volume levels with the sliders. And if you are having trouble with your headset or microphone, you can access the Audio Setup Wizard from the Tools menu on the top toolbar.
