Act 1, booklet activity pages 40 & 41. By Nina Fischer, Valentina Pernarcic & Olivia
Vidal
1.“Where you goin’ all dressed up?... What happened to your hair?” Are Eddie’s
remark to Catherine compliments or criticism? Explain your answer.
In this quote, Eddie is criticising Catherine’s choice of clothing and style. He is being
overprotective of Catherine, and that’s why he doesn’t want Catherine to wear provocative
clothing, because he doesn’t want anyone coming near Catherine.
“I think it’s too short, ain’t it (Talking about a skirt)”
2.What do Eddie’s comments on Catherine’s current behaviour suggest about his
relationship with her?
“Eddie: (Talking about a job) What job? She’s gonna finish school.”
“Catherine: Eddie you won’t believe it-“
“Eddie: No- No, you gonna finish school. What kinda job, what do you mean? All of a sudden
you-“
( The conversation keeps on going with Eddie refusing to accept that Catherine might work,
and with Catherine and Beatrice trying to convince him otherwise )
Eddie is mysteriously exceptionally overprotective of Catherine. He shows more affection
towards her than an uncle should, and Is slowly neglecting his wife, Beatrice, and replacing
her with his nephew, Catherine, without her realizing.
3.To What extent does Eddie send Catherine mixed messages by this contradictory
language, telling her on the one hand ‘You’re a baby’ and on the other hand ‘You’re
getting to be a big girl now’
When Eddie calls Catherine a baby, he wants to minimize her, so, if he keeps calling her a
baby, she will somehow starts acting like one, to a certain extent, and always come back to
him and depend on him. But, when Eddie calls Catherine a big girl, he is either trying to
mock her, or trying to get her to act like maturely like an adult, and trying desperately to get
her to understand his point of view in certain subjects.
4. What is revealed about Eddie’s character from the following?
-Beatrice’s comment:“I’m just afraid if it don’t turn out good you’ll be mad at me’.
In this quote, Beatrice’s fear of Eddie’s anger is clearly conveyed. She wants to reach his
expectations so he wouldn’t get mad, otherwise, he would probably lash out on her.
-His pattern of three questions:“What’s all this about? Where’s she goin’?....What’s goin’
on?’
In this sentence, Eddie is asking about Catherine. This clearly shows that he is worried
about her, and that he is being overprotective, maybe more than he should.
-His negative language:No-no...not. Wonderful….never get nowheres….no job’.
He is not a person with many manners. He speaks his opinion, not caring about who he
might hurt . And his opinion is mostly negative towards the women in his life, he speaks a
negative language.
-On debating Catherine’s job:’That ain’t what I wanted,though.’
Eddie already planned out Catherine’s life. He wanted her to always be near him, to be his
little girl, no matter the age or the circumstances, but, when she doesn’t do what he wanted
her to, he gets angry.
5-What sort of relationship does Eddie have with his wife?
Eddie, it seems, has neglected his wife. He is constantly dismissing her, her ideas and
beliefs, meanwhile, worrying, listening and caring about Catherine, his niece.
It seems like he doesn’t care about his marriage anymore, and is still with Beatrice out of
obligation.
6-Eddie directly calls Catherine a variety of affectionate terms, such as ‘Katie...kid...a
baby….a big girl...Madonna...Garbo’-discuss how each one gives a different view of
Catherine in his eyes.
All terms have one thing in common, and it’s that they show that Eddie cares about him, in
different aspects that is, but he still does.
The terms ‘Katie, Madonna, and Garbo’ are affectionate terms, they portrait beauty and
affection, and you can see Eddie call Catherine that, but not Beatrice, mysterious……
Meanwhile, the terms ‘Kid, A baby, and A Big Girl’ make Catherine look younger, and you
can clearly see that Eddie means ‘His Kid, ‘His Baby’, and ‘His Big Girl’. He doesn’t want her
to grow up and leave him.
