that	Education	is	one	of	the	two	“most	pressing	challenges	facing	the	country”
                                                                             .

In	a	nutshell,	the	programme	entails	the	following:
• A	business	leader	becomes	a	learning	and	development	partner	to	a	school	principal
• Together	they	are	tasked	with	one	of	the	toughest	challenges	facing	our	country:	to	engage	parents	and	other	members	of	the
community	around	the	school	to	partner	with	the	principal	and	teachers	to	educate	our	children.
• The	business	leader	(Partner	for	Possibility)	and	principal	(Principal	for	Possibility)	are	supported	through	formal	training,	coaching

  • 3. Introduction Best Social Involvement Programme The Vineyard Hotel & Spa, supports amongst other charities and projects the ‘our kids of the cape’ fund (KOTC). KOTC, was established by the Petousis group in 2007, with the aim of assisting local children’s community programmes. Guests staying at the Hotel are asked to contribute a small donation, per room per night, which is billed to their accounts. The Hotel matches the contribution Rand for Rand. Our Guests are under no obligation to pay the amount and they may request to have it adjusted from their hotel account at reception. A committee of staff from the supported Hotels run the committee and distribute funds. They meet monthly to evaluate progress of projects and authorize funding to new ones. The ‘our kids of the cape’ fund Committee also arrange various social involvement projects for staff, and draw on the resources of the hotels to assist with sponsorships and donations in kind. Between September 2010 and July 2011, R156 486.44 was collected by the KOTC. In 2010/11, R470 978.51 was donated or spent on CSI initiatives.

  • 5. Baphumelele Children’s Home - www.baphumelele.org.za Baphumelele Children’s Home in Khayelitsha is a very special home to about 180 children from newborn to 18. It is place of safety for abandoned, abused, neglected or orphaned children - most infected or affected by HIV/Aids. To limit the effects of institutional living, children are accommodated in houses each with 12 children. KOTC pays for one houses expenses monthly. Woodside Special Care Centre - www.woodside.co.za Woodside Special Care Centre is a private residential home to about 90 intellectually and physically disabled children and young adults. Committee member Elanie Potgieter took part in the Old Mutual JoBurg2C race and with help from sponsors and the hotels Elanie managed to raise enough money for a new motorised wheelchair for Sherna, a resident of Woodside. For the first time in her life Sherna is able to be mobile. JL Zwane - www.jlzwane.sun.ac.za More than 130 children (Grades 1- 8) from different schools attend the after-school programme. Learners are provided study and homework support. Learners also receive a meal daily. The Stellenbosch Hospice - www.hospicepalliativecaresa.co.za The Stellenbosch Hospice provides holistic palliative and chronic health care to all the communities of Stellenbosch and the surrounding areas since 1992. They offer a 24/7 palliative ward service, home based care for over 400 patients per day, who suffer mainly from Cancer, HIV/AIDS and TB and provide the psycho- social support and counselling to patients and their families to cope with the burden of disease. Aquarius School Feeding Scheme - clkolbe@cybersmart.co.za The Aquarius School feeding scheme provides soup and bread to over 8500 of Cape Towns poorest Children at School. Retired pensioner, Clive Kolbe collects thousands of loaves of bread weekly and delivers this to the needy schools.
  • 6. In addition to their monthly donation KOTC supported Clive Kolbe’s raincoat initiative & sponsored 60 raincoats for primary school children living in Grassy Park in August 2010. Cost of 60 raincoats was R4199.00. Genesis Trust - www.genesistrust.co.za Genesis Trust sees potential in the disadvantaged children of South Africa. These children, like any other child, have dreams, ambition and talent. The real needs of these children are education, mentoring, guidance and support. Without funds none of these are possible - funding to help set up a firm foundation to further their education, issue them with home basics and to help them find work and a place to live. St Michaels Home for Girls - www.st-mikesct.org.za St Michaels Home for Girls is an innovative; therapeutic and developmental residential environment for up to 25 vulnerable young women between the ages of 13 and 18 who have been seriously traumatized and removed from their families for their own protection and safety by an order of the Children’s Court. KOTC members and staff from hotels on one of their visits to St Michaels Home. The regular project visits increase awareness amongst staff and are encouraged to donate toiletries & unwanted clothes to the girls. Eersterivier Empowerment Centre - mike.luppnow@vodamail.co.za Anthea Pieters of the Eersterivier Empowerment Centre takes care of children who have been placed in her care, who are all victims of neglect, violence, drug and alcohol abuse of the parents. These children range from 1 - 11 years old. Over and above this, she also provides temporary shelter to women and children who are the victims of domestic violence.
  • 7. The ‘our kids of the cape’ fund ad-hoc projects: Reach for a Dream – September 2010 – R3 000 In October 2010 we reached out to Amber; a 9 year old girl suffering from brain cancer, her interests include dressing her dollies & watching 7de Laan. Amber’s wish was to have a kiddies laptop and a trip to Robben Island. Unfortunately Amber’s blood count was very low and we could not make her trip to Robben Island come true we were able to present her with her very own kiddies laptop, a big bunch of fresh sunflowers and a groceries voucher for her family. Update: Amber is still receiving chemotherapy. Boys and Girls Town – September 2010 – R5 000 We assisted with funding for their “Cool Running’s Fun Day” Initiative is to provide the boys in their care who come from disadvantaged communities an opportunity to be part of an activity that will broaden their outlook on life so that they can see that there is more out there than drugs and gangs. It was a one day event, where 30 boys went bobsledding on the 1.25 km track. Sisanda FunDaytion – 2nd October 2010 – R5 000 KOTC sponsored a Fun Day for children through the ‘Sisanda FunDaytion’, the children went to Monkey Town, went bowling, had lunch and received toys and equipment. Sisanda aims to provide recreationally deprived beneficiaries with the opportunity to play and learn in a safe environment and expose these disadvantage children to suitable role models. Percy Bartley House – December 2010 – R7 500 Located in Woodstock, is a home to 25 youths aged between 14 – 18 years, many of whom are street children. KOTC donated R7 500 towards their education programme. With this KOTC contribution it will enable PBH to send more children to school.
  • 8. Shiloh Klipheuwel – December 2010 – R7 500 A centre in an underprivileged area addressing learning and social problems. KOTC donated R7 500 towards the upgrading of classrooms. Muizenberg Beach Club – March 2011 – R5 000 The project provides daily activities for the disadvantaged youth from the greater Lavender Hill area which help the children to develop a strong sense of self, teaching them to live a positive, natural, and healthy lifestyle and to appreciate themselves and the world around them. The KOTC’s R5 000 donation went towards food for the children for five months. These Numbers have Faces – March 2011 – R8 976 The primary objective of TNHFSA is to empower township youth to change their communities from the inside out. TNHFSA seeks to accomplish this objective by investing in the higher education of township youth and operating within a dynamic Community Impact Model (CIM). CIM engages a partnership between TNHFSA and the scholars, TNHFSA scholars are required to invest in their own communities in the following ways: Community Service; Mentoring & Tutoring; Financial Literacy and Reinvestment. • 9. School at the Centre of Community - Partnering for Possibility – March 2011 – R5 000 Our Group Development Manager is presently involved in a project aimed at supporting the National Planning Commission’s view that Education is one of the two “most pressing challenges facing the country” . In a nutshell, the programme entails the following: • A business leader becomes a learning and development partner to a school principal • Together they are tasked with one of the toughest challenges facing our country: to engage parents and other members of the community around the school to partner with the principal and teachers to educate our children. • The business leader (Partner for Possibility) and principal (Principal for Possibility) are supported through formal training, coaching and communities of practice The benefits are enormous for the business leader, principal, teachers, parents, learners and for all of us in South Africa. The Vineyard Hotel & Spa have partnered with Fairmount High School’s principal – Mr. Terence Klassen. The investment is valued at over R42 000.
