There are expectations to consider before making a leap to the “dark side.” The transition from programmer to manager is made particularly challenging by the dramatic difference between what made us successful as programmers and what it takes to successfully manage others. In addition, programmers are an interesting management challenge. We tend to be free spirits, playful, curious, and (very) independent. How can you ease the transition into management? What’s management really about? What will you give up? Bio: Ron Lichty wants to make software development better worldwide by advancing the practice of software development management. He has been alternating between consulting with and managing software development and product organizations for 25 years, almost all of those spent untangling the knots in software development and transforming chaos to clarity, the last 20 of those in the era of Agile. Originally a programmer, he earned several patents and wrote two popular programming books before being hired into his first management role by Apple Computer, which nurtured his managerial growth in both development and product management roles. With each advancement in the manufacturing process, a decreasing percentage of the CPU can operate at full capacity, leading to the emergence of the term 'dark silicon'. This trend necessitates techniques that utilize chip area to optimize power efficiency through specialized accelerators. The presentation will outline key concepts that led to the dark silicon such as Moore’s law and breakdown of Dennard scaling, followed by an overview of current and upcoming CPU accelerators. The focus will then shift to vector units and the specifics of vector programming. Attendees will be introduced to registers, a range of vector operations, and methods to develop branchless algorithms such as sorting networks. The session will conclude with an overview of the new Java Vector API and how it was already picked up by projects to do AI inference (Llama 2) and vector search (AstraDB and Cassandra).

9. @VladimirWrites 4 – Be Approachable • Listen to their problems and guide them • Onboarding should be the most important task in your sprint • Learn to be OK with being interrupted • Being in a flow is overrated

10. @VladimirWrites 5 – Pair-Programming • It’s an awesome way to build a relationship • Let juniors do most of the work

11. @VladimirWrites 6 – Help Them Grow • Teach them how to find a solution instead of showing them the solution • Don’t give them boring and easy tasks • They should be contributing to the codebase from the get-go • Your main goal when working with juniors is for them to spend as little time as possible being juniors

12. @VladimirWrites 7 – Give Constructive Feedback • Learn how to give feedback • Concentrate on the behavior, not the person • Be specific, be realistic, and be timely • Avoid judgments • Keep it private • Ask if they are ready to receive feedback before giving it

13. @VladimirWrites 8 – Learn From Junior Developers • Juniors are learning 10 times more than you are • Staying up to date with new technologies is much easier when you have junior devs in the team

14. @VladimirWrites 9 – Listen to Their Ideas • Juniors bring fresh ideas, excitement, and optimism to the team • They are also not useless, or a net negative to the team

15. @VladimirWrites Bonus Point – Your career is suffering the most when your company doesn’t employ junior devs • Team filled with senior developers is not a fun place to work at • Having juniors in the team will enable you to grow
