Managing resource constraints can ensure businesses are even more profitable In an article published by Business Green, a new non‐profit group is urging companies to get on board the next manufacturing revolution. Aiming to improve UK manufacturing performance by encouraging the sector to move towards more energy efficient, sustainable and profitable business models, a non‐profit group named the Next Manufacturing Revolution (NMR) have established themselves as a helping hand. The not‐for‐profit collaboration has been established by campaign group 2degrees and consultants Lavery Pennell, along with the Institute for Manufacturing and the University of Cambridge. According to the NWR a successful outcome will be improved company profitability, ‘greening’ of the manufacturing sector, creation of manufacturing jobs and national economic revitalisation. The NMR are far from being daunted by resource constraints, changing customer demands and rapidly shifting technologies saying that this new economic reality offers huge profit opportunities for smart manufacturers. In order to quantify the value available to companies and estimate the benefits to the UK economy including on‐shoring manufacturing activities, jobs, economic growth and environmental improvement, the group is commencing a sector‐wide study in the UK. Dr Greg Lavery, chief executive of Lavery Pennell, spoke to Business Green ahead of the group launch, he said: "Theres a hell of a lot of value missed by UK manufacturers right now.” "There are leading companies who are well advanced on sustainability and want to be the best. Then there are laggards, which without being rude, is the bulk of UK manufacturers. And theyre saying theyre suffering in the downturn and want to know what they can do to increase profits. Were saying heres the best practice in the sub‐sector and they can choose to go after it or not." It has been acknowledged that many companies have already taken action to deal with the increase in scarce resources. According to Lavery fewer are collaborating down the value chain to ensure a more sustainable supply of resources.
Tried and Tested A good example of a leading manufacturer in the UK which implemented measures and then reaped the benefits is Camfil Farr, with the assistance of William Dyer Electrical (UK) Limited they reduced energy and waste consumption, improved best practice standards and saved energy. They have now established an energy‐aware culture and a corporate ethos of continuous improvement when it comes to energy management and sustainability. William Dyer Electrical (UK) Limited : Installed energy efficient lighting throughout the whole factory with daylight dimming sensors built into each fitting. Installed low energy cluster lamps to loading bay low bay fittings which required the removal of 400watt lamps as well as control gear and the installation of 100watt cluster lamps linked to photocell and time clock control to maximize energy efficiency making over 75% reduction in energy in this area alone. Installed energy metering and provided staff training to ensure Camfil were able to monitor consumption so that sudden changes can be acted upon quickly thus preventing energy wastage Installed soft start equipment to machinery which has prevented the wastage of energy on high current equipment Camfil Farr made financial savings of approximately £200,000 and saw a tangible reduction in energy
consumption at their manufacturing facility in Haslingden. With the assistance of William Dyer Electrical, they continue to monitor energy usage and identify priority areas where future savings can be made. Continual improvements Camfil Farr became the 1st company to achieve the ERV (Energy Reduction Verification) Kitemark and subsequently gained the ISO 500001 Energy Management Standard. Throughout 2011, the company won a series of awards including Excellence in Carbon Reduction at the Energy Awards, the Best Engineering Plant at the Best Factory Awards and the Overall winner of the Carbon Reduction Award from FM heavyweight MITIE. Although the main cost savings have now been made William Dyer Electrical will continue to provide support on an on‐going basis with the application of careful energy management, robust monitoring and measurement of energy consumption. In 2010 William Dyer installed additional monitoring equipment to Camfil’s production areas allowing greater accuracy of monitoring to generate future savings. Additional PIR lighting controls to Canteen and reception areas. 24 ceiling sweep fans have been installed in the production areas to drive hot air that accumulated in the building apex down to where it is needed. In 2011 William Dyer installed energy efficient hand dryers in toilets to replace paper towels together with further PIR lighting controls in office corridors and the first stages of an office lighting upgrade to LED lighting. William Dyer Electrical carries out full periodic testing of all Camfil’s electrical circuits to comply with NIC EIC guidelines in accordance with BS7671 which continues to ensure the efficiency of the electrical installations.
