The Superintendent’s Bulletin is posted weekly on Fridays on our website. It provides timely, relevant
information about meetings, professional development opportunities, curriculum and program development,
grant awards, and school committee news. The bulletin is also the official vehicle for job postings. Please
read the bulletin regularly and use it to inform colleagues of meetings and other school news.

Dear Colleagues and Friends,

In the spring of 1988 a two-line ad in The Townsman caught my attention. The school committee was on the
hunt for a per diem secretary to record the minutes of its meetings. At the time, one of the focal centers for our
family was, of course, the elementary school where our children were enrolled - Bates. I had back burnered my
professional life at Houghton Mifflin Company a few years earlier, and was immersed in the Bates community as a
room parent, art appreciation volunteer, environmental aide, and PTO secretary. I didn't answer the ad.

When the ad reappeared in The Townsman in September, I became more interested in it. As the recorder of
minutes for boards at Houghton and several non profits, I certainly knew the task. The shorthand I had learned as
a teen was not rusty. This time, I did reply and was hired.

Since that date, the opus of my record in behalf of the school committee has covered the growth and
development of a system under the watch of five superintendents (two of them interim). In the mid-1990's, as
Wellesley was searching for a new superintendent, I too was ready to resume full time employment.
Serendipitously, the opening developed for the position I am now preparing to leave. Matt hired me as his
administrative assistant, and melded the school committee work into my new full time role. It was the beginning of a
fourteen-year professional ride of a lifetime.

The multi faceted nature of this position in its interface with the public, with other town entities, and with the
many branches of our school communities is simultaneously challenging and fulfilling. Among routine and varied
tasks, my chief pleasures have been in greeting and helping initiate newly appointed faculty, assisting hundreds of
you mark your progress to advanced salary lanes, brokering the transfer of course vouchers, and coordinating and
facilitating events that occur within the cycle of each school year. We have worked together in a common purpose.
I have delighted in discovering mutual shared interests with many of you. We have laughed together. We have
cried together.

Now in this spring of 2010, other matters are drawing my attention. The retirement chapter of life beckons, with
its promise of greater freedom to pursue my personal passions for choral music, birding, needlepoint and quilting,
and travel - and we hope that two little ones will be able more frequently to visit “Camp Grammy and Grampy.”

In recent weeks many of you have taken a moment to speak with me in acknowledgment of my retirement
milestone. I have appreciated every one of these encounters. As I bid you farewell, my memory bank overflows
with recollections of our time together.

                                                                      With joy,

                                                                      Mary

Superintendent's Bulletin 5-14-10

  • 1. Wellesley Public Schools 40 Kingsbury Street Superintendent’s Bulletin Wellesley, Massachusetts 02481 http://www.wellesley.k12.ma.us/district/bulletins.htm Bella T. Wong Bulletin #32 Superintendent of Schools May 14, 2010 The Superintendent’s Bulletin is posted weekly on Fridays on our website. It provides timely, relevant information about meetings, professional development opportunities, curriculum and program development, grant awards, and school committee news. The bulletin is also the official vehicle for job postings. Please read the bulletin regularly and use it to inform colleagues of meetings and other school news. Dear Colleagues and Friends, In the spring of 1988 a two-line ad in The Townsman caught my attention. The school committee was on the hunt for a per diem secretary to record the minutes of its meetings. At the time, one of the focal centers for our family was, of course, the elementary school where our children were enrolled - Bates. I had back burnered my professional life at Houghton Mifflin Company a few years earlier, and was immersed in the Bates community as a room parent, art appreciation volunteer, environmental aide, and PTO secretary. I didn't answer the ad. When the ad reappeared in The Townsman in September, I became more interested in it. As the recorder of minutes for boards at Houghton and several non profits, I certainly knew the task. The shorthand I had learned as a teen was not rusty. This time, I did reply and was hired. Since that date, the opus of my record in behalf of the school committee has covered the growth and development of a system under the watch of five superintendents (two of them interim). In the mid-1990's, as Wellesley was searching for a new superintendent, I too was ready to resume full time employment. Serendipitously, the opening developed for the position I am now preparing to leave. Matt hired me as his administrative assistant, and melded the school committee work into my new full time role. It was the beginning of a fourteen-year professional ride of a lifetime. The multi faceted nature of this position in its interface with the public, with other town entities, and with the many branches of our school communities is simultaneously challenging and fulfilling. Among routine and varied tasks, my chief pleasures have been in greeting and helping initiate newly appointed faculty, assisting hundreds of you mark your progress to advanced salary lanes, brokering the transfer of course vouchers, and coordinating and facilitating events that occur within the cycle of each school year. We have worked together in a common purpose. I have delighted in discovering mutual shared interests with many of you. We have laughed together. We have cried together. Now in this spring of 2010, other matters are drawing my attention. The retirement chapter of life beckons, with its promise of greater freedom to pursue my personal passions for choral music, birding, needlepoint and quilting, and travel - and we hope that two little ones will be able more frequently to visit “Camp Grammy and Grampy.” In recent weeks many of you have taken a moment to speak with me in acknowledgment of my retirement milestone. I have appreciated every one of these encounters. As I bid you farewell, my memory bank overflows with recollections of our time together. With joy, Mary
