Pietrack served as the FLC Assistant Coach for 11 seasons. The #15 Skyhawks enter the season as the number two pick in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference after claiming the league’s regular season and tournament titles in 2015-16 with an overall record of 28-4 (19-3 RMAC) as they advanced to the South Central Regional Semifinals last season. FLC is led by RMAC Preseason Player of the Year Joshua Blaylock who led the Skyhawks with 18.1 points per game last season to be named an NABC All-Region selection. The Buffs are 7-1 all-time against Fort Lewis with the last meeting coming on Dec. 2, 2001 as WT topped FLC (85-69) in Canyon. Fort Lewis is 0-3 all-time in Canyon. NEW MEXICO HIGHLANDS The Cowboys are led by third year head coach Craig Snow who has coached four All-RMAC and one All-Region selection during his time in Las Vegas. Prior to NMHU, Snow spent three seasons at the University of New Mexico. New Mexico Highlands enters the season picked fourth in the RMAC Preseason Poll as they finished the 2015-16 season with an overall record of 15-14 while setting a new school record of RMAC wins at 14-8 as they advanced to the RMAC Quarterfinals before falling to Colorado Mesa. The Cowboys are led by Preseason All-RMAC selection Marlon Johnson who averaged 15 points per game for NMHU last season in 28 contests while averaging 9.4 rebounds per contest with 31 blocks. The Buffs lead the all-time series against the Cowboys, 30-2 with WT taking both meetings between the two teams last season. NMHU is 1-22 all-time against the Buffs in Canyon. - LAST TIME OUT UAFS RECAP The Buffs are off to their best start to a season since 2012-13 thanks to an 11-0 run in the heart of the second half as WT outlasted #23 Arkansas-Fort Smith, 94-86 in the finale of the CCA Division II Tipoff Classic at the Santiago Canyon College Athletics Complex in Orange, California on Sunday afternoon. WT was led by Jerrod Walton with 24 points followed by David Chavlovich (19), Jordan Evans (17) and Eric Golightly Jr. (10) with double-digit points while Chavlovich led WT with six rebounds and three assists. WT went 33-of-65 (50.8%) from the floor including 10- of-29 (34.5%) from deep and 18-of-27 (66.7%) from the free throw line to go along with 37 rebounds (13 offensive, 24 defensive), 13 assists, 13 turnovers, five blocks and three steals. CCA DIVISION II TIPOFF CLASSIC RECAP The Buffs wrapped up the CCA Division II Tipoff Classic with a perfect 3-0 record as they topped Azusa Pacific (86-72), St. Cloud State (83-70) and #23 Arkansas-Fort Smith (94-86) in the three-day event. WT is now off to their best start to a season since 2012-13 when the Buffs started the season 6-0. WT was led offensively by Evans with 19.0 points per contest followed by Walton (17.0ppg) and Chavlovich (16.7ppg). The Buffs shot 48.1% (90-187) from the floor during the opening weekend including 39.7% (31-78) from long range and 62.7% (52-83) from the free throw line to go along with 36.7 rebounds per game. Midwestern State picked up 12 of the possible 28 first place votes for a total of 253 points to sit atop of the poll followed by Tarleton State (eight first place, 240 points). Angelo State was picked third with eight first place votes for a total of 239 points followed by the Buffs who registered the final first place vote for a total of 211 points. Texas A&M-Commerce (152) was picked fifth followed by Texas A&M-Kingsville (120), Cameron (108), Eastern New Mexico (93), UT Permian Basin (88) and Western New Mexico (36). The Lone Star Conference expands to 10 basketball-playing institutions starting in 2016-17 as Western New Mexico (Silver City, New Mexico) and UT Permian Basin (Odessa, Texas) join the league. Each team will play a double round-robin conference schedule with 18 conference games. The Allen Event Center will host the LSC Basketball Championships for the sixth straight season on March 2-5. LSC PRESEASON PLAYER OF THE YEAR WT junior guard David Chavlovich was nearly a unanimous selection to be named the third LSC Preseason Player of the Year in program history, joining Rod Prater (2003-04) and Donald Sims (2012-13). The Arlington native was named a National Basketball Coaches Asso- ciation (NABC) All-American as a sophomore as he led the LSC in scoring with 20.5 points per game. He set a new program single-season record in three-point field goals made (111) and three-point field goals attempted (287) while joining the 1,000 Point Club and being named the Lone Star Conference Player of the Year. The Arlington native has also been named a Preseason All-American by Sporting News and the Basketball Times while making an appearance on the Division II Bulletin Super 16 list. WT HEAD COACH TOM BROWN WT head coach Tom Brown enters his third season at the helm of the Buffs as the team registered their first 20+ win season since 2010-11 with an overall mark of 21-10 while finishing second in the LSC standings. The Buffs enter the season ranked ninth in the annual Sporting News Division II Preseason Top-10 Poll while receiving votes in the NABC Division II Preseason Top-25 Poll. In just two short years Brown has turned around the West Texas A&M University Basketball Program. Brown led the team to its first 20+ win season since 2010-11. The Buffs were picked to finish 5th in the LSC this past season and despite a pre-season, season ending injury to sophomore starter Carl White the team still managed to finish 2nd in the LSC with an overall record of 21-10. The 2nd place finish is the highest since the conference was split North/South. The Buffs continued to battle minor injuries throughout the year but every player that was called on would step up. Under Brown’s di- rection the team had some very strong individual performances. WT sophomore guard David Chav- lovich led the way. For his outstanding play David was named an NABC All-American, the Lone Star Conference Player of the Year and 1st Team All- LSC selection. Sophomore Jordan Evans (playing in his first season) received honorable mention All-LSC acclaim. The Buffs again were dominate in the classroom as the team GPA exceeded a 3.0 for the year. 2015-16 the Buffs set a new record in the classroom. The team recorded the highest GPA for Men’s Basketball in a season. Coach Brown inherited a WT team that won two games in the LSC and 10 games overall in 2013-14. Brown had to start from scratch in late April, the team had three seniors and one walkon redshirt freshman. Just three student-athletes saw playing time from the previous year and the team was picked to finish last in the Lone Star Confer- ence Preseason Poll. However, under Brown West Texas A&M University finished the season 5th in the LSC and posted a 17-12 overall record. The Buffs made the LSC Tournament as the fifth seed. There were some individual accolades as well, all three of the returning seniors improved on their scoring average from the previous season. Tez Dumars surpassed Maurice Cheeks in WT All-Time scoring and finished his career ranked 4th All-Time in scoring at WT. David Chavlovich was the squads leading scorer, 2nd Team All-Conference Perform- er and the Freshman of the Year in the LSC as he averaged 16.5 points per contest to go along with 93 assists and 30 steals. In 2014-15, the Buffs set a new record in the classroom. The team recorded the highest GPA for Men’s Basketball in a season. Tom was the driving force as the Associate Head Coach and head recruiter in the most successful Division II men’s basketball program in recent history at Winona State University. The Warriors won the NCAA Division II National Cham- pionship in 2006 and 2008 and finished as the National Finalist in 2007. During that span, Winona State posted an unprecedented 105-6 record. WT Assistant Coach Quincy Henderson played for Coach Brown from 2005-2008. Quincy’s record as a collegiate player at WSU was 105-6. Named Division II Bulletin’s ‘Program of the Decade’ for 2000-2009, WSU set a NCAA Division II record with 57 consecutive wins, a run that began on Jan. 13, 2006, and didn’t end until the national title game on Mar. 24, 2007. The 2007-08 Warrior squad won a NCAA record 38 games. An excellent recruiter and teacher, Brown recruited and developed some of the best players in the nation with three National Player of the Year recipients, along with seven first team All-America honorees. 11 players total have earned All-America status including WT Sopho- more David Chavlovich. Brown has coached five NSIC Most Valuable Players, seven NSIC Defen- sive Players of the Year and two Elite Eight Most Valuable Players. Brown is doing it again at WT as David Chav- lovich has earned both Freshman of the Year and Player of the Year in the best Division II Confer- ence in the Nation, the Lone Star Conference. Brown attended and played basketball (1988-1992) and baseball (1991) at Winona State University. He finished his Warrior career ranked fifth in program history in scoring, second in assists and first in steals. He earned his bachelor’s degree in 1993 in physical education and completed his master’s degree in education in 1998. He and his wife Dr. Trisha Brown are the proud parents of three children, TJ, Zach and Ella. The Buffs went 28-of-64 (43.8%) from the floor including 10-of-24 (41.7%) from deep and 20-of-28 (71.4%) from the charity stripe to go along with 37 rebounds (nine offensive, 28 defensive), 13 assist, seven turnovers, two blocks and nine steals. Evans led the way for WT with 20 points followed by Chavlovich (16), Walton (14), White (13), and Quaid (12) in double-digits while Quaid ended the game with 10 rebounds for a double-double. Azusa Pacific went 23-of-57 (40.4%) from the field including 9-of-26 (34.6% from long range and 17-of-23 (73.9%) from the free throw line to go along with 40 rebounds (10 offensive, 30 defensive), 13 assists, 20 turnovers, two blocks and four steals. The Arlington native set a new program single-season record in three-point field goals made (111) and three-point field goals attempted (287). The Arlington native joined the 1,000 Point Club back on February 10th with 25 points in a loss at then #25 Midwestern State. Quaid scored a career high 16 points in Canyon against Texas A&M-Commerce (Feb. 17) as he went 5-11 from the floor and 4-6 from the charity stripe, he tallied his first career double-double against Cameron (Dec. 31) with 12 points and 11 rebounds. At Fossil Ridge High School: Quaid came to Canyon by way of Fossil Ridge High School in Fort Collins, Colo. Under head coach Matt Johannsen. Walton had a breakout game on February 3rd in Canyon as the sophomore went 6-9 from the floor including a perfect 14-14 from the free throw line to score a career high 27 points for the Buffs. Walton registered his first career double-double in Canyon against Lubbock Christian (Nov. 19) as he finished the game with 10 rebounds and 11 points. At Madison Area Technical College: Walton was no stranger to athletic honors in his first year at Madison Area Technical College. Walton was named a first- team North Central Community College Conference (N4C) member and a first-team NJCAA Region IV all-region athlete in his freshman season. He also picked up all-region tournament honors after helping the Wolfpack win 20 games en route to a successful and deep run into the national tournament. He went 17-36 (47.2%) from the field including 5-13 (38.5%) from behind the arc and 14-22 (63.6%) from to charity stripe to go along with 42 total rebounds (1.4/game). Brockman dished out 24 assists on the season to go along with one block and nine steals. He scored a career high 10 points at Texas A&M-Commerce (Jan. 20) as he went a perfect 4-4 from the floor including 2-2 from long range. 2014-15 (Sophomore): The local product saw time in all 29 games for the Buffs during his first season, playing 291 minutes (10.0 per game). Brock- man shot 52.5% from the floor and 47.1% from the perimeter. He totaled 50 rebounds and 14 steals. The Amarillo High grad scored a season-high nine points in a home win over Hillsdale Baptist (Jan. 3). At Amarillo High School: Brockman graduated from nearby Amarillo High School in 2012. Played for the Sandies under head coach Jason Pillion and led the team to a 25-4 record his senior season. Personal: Born March 8th.
