The border of a genuine
bill are clear and
unbroken. On the
counterfeit, the lines in
the outer margin and
scrollwork may be blurred
and indistinct.

United States currency is
one-fourth linen and
three-fourths cotton and
contains red and blue
fibers.

14. Intaglio Printing
The surface of the note
feels slightly raised, while
the reverse side feels
slightly indented. This
process is called intaglio
printing.

15. Serial Numbers
Genuine serial numbers
have a distinctive style
and are evenly spaced.
The serial numbers are
printed in the same ink
color as the Treasury Seal.

16. Treasury Seal
On a counterfeit, the
serial numbers may differ
in color or shade of ink
from the Treasury seal.
The numbers may not be
uniformly spaced or
aligned.

17. Federal Reserve and Treasury Seals
On a genuine bill, the saw-
tooth points of the
Federal Reserve and
Treasury seals are clear,
distinct, and sharp. The
counterfeit seals may have
uneven, blunt, or broken
saw-tooth points.

A security thread can be
found on the redesigned
$5, $10, $20, $50 and
$100 notes.

Security thread on each

thread will glow when
illuminated by UV light.

The redesigned $100 note
is the latest denomination
of U.S. currency to be
redesigned with enhanced
