Building a Professional
Email Template: A
Checklist
By Wired Marketing
If you’ve ever started
to build an email
template, you know
how many factors
there are to
consider…
Images, call to
actions, copy,
branding…
The list goes on…
But don’t worry.
We’ve compiled this easy to use
checklist so that no part of your
email template is forgotten
about.
Take a look at the 9 things you
simply cannot miss…
1. Send Plain text and HTML
Some email users prefer
different types of email. By
sending both types of email
to ensure all of your
contacts can understand
the email content and have
the same user experience.
2. Build a clean design
Your email should
be uncluttered and
easy to read. Make
is obvious where
the contact should
be aiming their
attention
3. Add some colour
Including colour as part of
your email can really help it
stand out within the inbox.
4. Break up text with bullet
points
Email users scan content. Make your
paragraphs easy to use by using
bullet points or small paragraphs
5. Include a Call to Action
Tell your contact what they should do after reading
your email. Do you want them to download a
document, fill out a form, or request a call back?
6. Use visually striking
images
Add some visual content to your emails by
including images. Make sure you have a
balance of text and images, ideally 60%
text and 40% images.
7. Add social sharing buttons
Encourage contacts to become your advocates.
Tell them to share your template across their
social networks. Make sure the icons are well
placed and easy to click.
8. Include contact information
Your contacts should be able to easily
contact you if they have any questions.
Include your phone number, email address
and social accounts in an obvious place.
9. Don’t forget Unsubscribe
links
Make sure your
email includes
an Unsubscribe
link in a
prominent
place. It’s the
law to include
this.

  • 7. 1. Send Plain text and HTML Some email users prefer different types of email. By sending both types of email to ensure all of your contacts can understand the email content and have the same user experience.
  • 8. 2. Build a clean design Your email should be uncluttered and easy to read. Make is obvious where the contact should be aiming their attention
  • 9. 3. Add some colour Including colour as part of your email can really help it stand out within the inbox.
  • 10. 4. Break up text with bullet points Email users scan content. Make your paragraphs easy to use by using bullet points or small paragraphs
  • 11. 5. Include a Call to Action Tell your contact what they should do after reading your email. Do you want them to download a document, fill out a form, or request a call back?
  • 12. 6. Use visually striking images Add some visual content to your emails by including images. Make sure you have a balance of text and images, ideally 60% text and 40% images.
  • 13. 7. Add social sharing buttons Encourage contacts to become your advocates. Tell them to share your template across their social networks. Make sure the icons are well placed and easy to click.
  • 14. 8. Include contact information Your contacts should be able to easily contact you if they have any questions. Include your phone number, email address and social accounts in an obvious place.
  • 15. 9. Don’t forget Unsubscribe links Make sure your email includes an Unsubscribe link in a prominent place. It’s the law to include this.
