2. Focused on Staff Recruitment
and Development
Christina Rowe, Director of Learning and
Talent Development at WebsterRogers, LLP
has been instrumental in putting the firm’s
focus on its greatest resource: staff members.
The South Carolina regional tax, accounting
and consulting firm has nine offices and 140
employees. It’s the second largest public
accounting and consulting firm in South
Carolina and recognized as one of the 175
largest U.S. firms.
All of those employees means that Rowe’s job
of helping to recruit, train and develop staff
members is both challenging and absolutely
critical to the firm’s success. She says that,
over time, the firm realized that it needed
to improve its onboarding processes and
career development offerings in order to be
competitive in the marketplace.
Part of the firm’s focus on helping staff
members advance in their careers has
been through the use of Wolters Kluwer’s
Professional and Client Services and
online courses.
“Our firm, I guess it was
probably about six or seven
years ago, recognized the
fact that if we don’t give our
people the attention they
need and grow our people,
then where does that leave
the firm and where does
that leave our clients? I
have to say that our leaders
have done a really good
job at recognizing that our
best asset is our people.”

The Importance of Training
One of the processes that Rowe began implementing several years ago was having
interns go through the basic training that Wolters Kluwer offers for the products,
like Introduction to CCH®
ProSystem fx®
Tax followed by the individual tax preparation
training courses.
Since then, says Rowe, “I have noticed that the questions the interns have about
the software is practically null and void. Ever since I’ve signed them up for those
introductory Wolters Kluwer’s webcasts, which are hands-on, the questions I’ve
had from them have been minimal about using the software. Now, it’s about, ‘Well,
what does this tax code mean?’ or ‘How do I handle that tax situation?’ They’re not
fumbling over, ‘Where do I change my preferences?’ and ‘Where do I print?’ That’s
been huge.”
Better Recruitment
Rowe says that when she hosts or attends recruiting events or talks to potential hires
through the firm’s college student leadership program, they all ask about the type of
training program they’ll receive at the firm.
“The first thing they say is, ‘Well, what is the training?
How are you going to prepare me for the job? Is
somebody going to be there to walk me through the
process or am I just going to be thrown into a room
and told to prepare a tax return?’ We can answer
that question with ‘We’re going to work with you.
We’re going to train you every step of the way.’”
That focus on developing new staff provides the firm with a competitive edge in
the marketplace.

Committing to Staff Development
throughout the Firm
The firm has taken that commitment to
helping people grow their skills and
expanded it to experienced staff members,
as well, through Wolters Kluwer’s courses
but also through mentorship programs with
the firm’s partners and managers, along
with the setting of career goals, which
the firm helps to support and enable. The
firm’s promise to employees is that staff
members will get support and on-going
staff development opportunities to be as
successful in their careers as they can be.
“What we’ve been doing is
taking the individual that
works for the firm and
saying, ‘Hey, you know
you’re important enough.
We’re interested in what
you’re interested in. Let’s talk
about where we can expand
your skills, whether it’s soft
skills or technical skills.’
I think it helps with morale,
it helps with retention, it
helps them to do a better job,
to grow up in the firm, and to
be successful themselves and
for the clients.”
Rowe also says that she encourages even very
experienced staff members to consider going
through the Wolters Kluwer’s training courses.

The Driver of Efficiency and Automation
Of course, one important reason for the
firm’s being able to completely reshape
how it works is the CCH®
ProSystem fx®
Suite.
From acquiring new clients to gathering
source documents and generating a tax
return, it provides integrated solutions to
organize and streamline tax, accounting
and workflow processes.
Among its many features is automation
of entering client tax data — which can
be automatically populated into CCH
ProSystem fx Tax from source documents
using CCH®
ProSystem fx®
Scan. This saves
time, increases productivity and profit
margins, standardizes workflow and prevents
data entry errors. The result is a firm ready
to compete in the marketplace today — and
in the future.
“People say, ‘Oh, I know
Excel®
,’ or ‘Oh, I know the
tax software. I know all the
ins and outs of that.’ But we
have a lot of experienced staff
that need training from the
simplest thing to the most
complicated thing.”
Her advice to others in both her own firm
and in other firms is: “Don’t limit yourself to
‘I’m very experienced. I don’t need the basic
training.’ It’s not that long, and you want to
build on the blocks that you should have
learned probably initially.”
