Beats, Breaks & Culture makes a triumphant
return this summer with a mix of live music, DJs
and dance, celebrating all that is hip-hop and
electronic music!
Habari Africa Festival

Explore the rich and diverse cultures of the
African continent. This year focuses on traditional
West-African griot music, augmented by rumba
and other contemporary sounds, through a
celebration of music, dance, film, literature,
fashion and crafts.
Hot & Spicy Food Festival
August 19-21
Dance to the hot sounds and savour the spicy
cuisine of the mighty Lower Mississippi River
and the Gulf of Mexico, with exciting musical
performances and a mouth-watering barbecue—
Southern-style!
TAIWANfest: A Cultural Tango with
Hong Kong
Co-produced by Asian Canadian Special Events
Association

Rediscover what defines Asia! This year’s
celebration features Hong Kong in a Cultural
Tango, showcasing stories and icons through
music, arts, games and activities and even a Pan-
Asian Culinary Invitational all designed to spice up
your summer!

Summer Music in the Garden
Presented by TD
Until September 18
On most Sundays at 4pm and Thursdays at 7pm,
the Toronto Music Garden comes to life with
the best classical music from around the world.
Guided tours of the garden are available on
Wednesdays at 11am and 5:30pm on concert
days, or pick up an audio guide to explore at your
own pace.

Kwame Stephens and Friends

Kwame Stephens, Simeon Taole (South Africa),
MK Bonsu (Ghana) and others will read from their
past works and discuss their latests projects, the
creative process and the state of African literature.

Learn to dance on Toronto’s waterfront to the
rhythmic beats and swinging sounds of live
bands. Inspired by Harbourfront Centre’s summer
festivals, styles range from bolero to big band and

Summer 2016 Exhibitions

This summer at The Power Plant, step into
interactive worlds created by contemporary visual
artists working with living sculpture, film, stage-set
and performance.
Franz Erhard Walther: Call to Action
Franz Erhard Walther’s first major solo exhibition
in Canada brings together a body of work,
including sculptures, drawings and videos, made
between the 1950s and the present. At the core
of the exhibition is an interest in Walther’s radical
consideration of the relationship between the
object, the space and the human body.
Ulla von Brandenburg: It Has a
Golden Red Sun and an Elderly Green
Moon
Ulla von Brandenburg explores states of
unconsciousness and the boundaries between
past and present, reality and illusion, and the
sacred and the secular. It features a new film shot
in the Théâtre des Armandiers, France, and a site-
specific installation.

Professor Emeritus of Art History and former Chair
of the Department of Art at Florida State University,
Roald Nasgaard, will discuss Franz Erhard
Walther’s exhibition Call to Action.
Power Kids: All the World’s a Stage
August 14
In this art workshop and tour for children inspired
by Ulla von Brandenburg’s installation, participants
will use a variety of materials to transform empty
wooden boxes into imagined spaces that set the
stage for stories.
Sunday Scene: Erika DeFreitas
August 21
Toronto-based, multidisciplinary conceptual artist
Erika DeFreitas will discuss Franz Erhard Walther’s
exhibition Call to Action.
Power Kids: All Spelled Out
August 28
Experiment with felting techniques and make your
own expressive letters inspired by Franz Erhard
Walther’s Das Neue Alphabet in this Power Kids art
workshop and tour for children.
