Amiri Baraka was born Everett LeRoi Jones in 1934 in New Jersey. He adopted the name Amiri Baraka in 1967, which means "peaceful/blessed one" in Arabic. 9. Controversy Critics of his work described it as having vernacular expressions of Black oppression to examples of racism, sexism, homophobia, and anti-Semitism that they found in his work. He wrote a poem about the 9-11 attacks on the World Trade Center and was criticized for the accusations it made on public people. He was renowned as the founder of Black Arts Movement (came about after Malcolm X assassination) in Harlem in the 1960’s.
