2. Something about Leeds……… Leeds began as a village, it had a population of around 200. By the standards of the time it was quite a large village. Many were much smaller. By 1801, the population of Leeds had reached 30,000. By the standards of the time it was a large town. By 1851 it had reached 101,000. Leeds was a very congested type of town, there were 86% workers and 14% normal people. Leeds grew rapidly but many of the new houses built were dreadful. Overcrowding was rife and streets were very dirty.
3. In 1843, parts of Leeds were described as “disgusting…owing to a general lack of paving and draining, irregularity of building, total absence of… cleanliness.” As a result there was a cholera epidemic in Leeds in 1832 which killed over 700 people. ……..Continued
4. Children were allowed to grow up a bit more before they started working. New unions helped workers gain their rights. It became a bit more organized (building, transport etc.) Leed's improved…….
5. She was born on 24 May 1819 and she died on 22 January 1901. Her reign was from 20 June 1837 – 22 January 1901. She was a just queen who had helped the industrial revolution to start. She is still remembered as the ‘grandmother of Europe’. Who was Queen Victoria???
6. Arriving in Leeds…… On Monday 6 September, 1858, Queen Victoria had arrived in Leeds to open the new town hall. The last time she visited was in 1835 when she was still a princess. It seemed as if Leeds was finally being appreciated……………… Prior to her arrival, the city had been cleaned up a bit and given a lick of paint in the poor areas. In many places, people were bribed to give POSTIVE VIEWS of Leeds……
7. ……Continued The mayor and the factory owners wanted her to take a different view of Leeds. (A Positive view) But the workers and the suffering people, wanted her to make improvements. (A Negative view) Whose view of Leeds will she remember when she goes back to London???
8. MAJOR EVENTS IN HISTORY FOR LEEDS In 1824 a dispensary opened where the poor could obtain free medicines. In 1872 the first public library opened. Roundhay Park also opened in 1872. Grand Theatre was built in 1878. City Varieties Music Hall was built in 1885. In 1891 Leeds gained its first electricity supply (WHAT???!!!). In 1893 Leeds was made to call a CITY. At the end of the century serious slum clearance began.
