Food Chain
What is Food Chain?
It is series of organisms each depending on the next as the source of food
is called food chain.
For Example:
Grass Grasshopper Toad Snake Hawk
(Producer) (Primary) (Secondary) (Tertiary) (Quaternary)
In the food chain, there are producers and
consumers.
Producers are organisms that produce their
own food with the use of sunlight, carbon
dioxide and water from the soil. This process is
known as Photosynthesis.
Consumers are organisms that feed on plants
or other animals for energy.
Types of consumers
The consumers are also categorized into four groups:
Primary consumers: are usually herbivores, feeding on plants,
herbs and fungus.
Example; grasshoppers.
Species that eat only plants, herbs and fungus are called
herbivores.
Secondary consumers; on the other hand, are mainly carnivores,
and prey on other animal. Example; toads.
Species that eat other animals are called Carnivores.
Tertiary consumers; are those consumers that get
energy directly from the secondary consumers.
Examples; snakes.
Quaternary consumers; are those consumers that get
energy from tertiary consumers. Examples; hawks.
Note:
A food chain will be
complete without
quaternary consumer.
