Sura
h
Al-
Kahf
Revelation
• Makki Surah
• 110 Verses – 18th Surah – 15th & 16th Juz
• Read between Thursday Maghrib to Friday Maghrib
• During the severe persecution of the muslims
• Surah was revealed to comfort and encourage the persecuted Muslims and
to show them how the righteous people were saved/protected in the past.
• Surah Kahf was revealed to answer the following 3 questions – which the
mushrikeen of Makkah, in consultation with the Jews, had asked the
Prophet ‫ﷺ‬ in order to test him:
1. Who were the companions of the cave?
2. What is the real story of Khidr?
3. What do you know about Dhul-Qarnain?
The Prophet ‫ﷺ‬) ) said: "Whoever commits to memory the first ten Ayat of
the Surat Al-Kahf, will be protected from (the trial of) Ad-Dajjal (Antichrist).“
[Muslim].
In another narration, the Prophet ‫ﷺ‬) ) said: "(Whoever commits to
memory) the last ten Ayat of Surat Al-Kahf, he will be protected from (the
trial of) Ad-Dajjal (Antichrist)."
Virtues of Surah Al-Kahf
A man was reciting Surat Al-Kahf, and a horse was tied with two ropes
beside him. As he was reciting, a cloud overshadowed him, and as it
began to come nearer and nearer, the horse began to trample violently.
The man came to the Prophet ‫ﷺ‬) ) in the morning and mentioned the
incident to him. He ‫ﷺ‬) ) said, "That was tranquility which descended as a
result of the recitation of the Qur'an.“ [Al-Bukhari and Muslim].
(18) Surah Al-Kahf = 4 stories

1st Story : People of the Cave : Verses 9-26
• This is the first story mentioned in Surah Al Kahf.
• A group of righteous young men lived in a town, where people used to worship Idols.
• The young men did not follow the people blindly but thought rationally.
• When the people and the oppressive king was against their belief in worshipping ONE Allah,
they decided to leave their luxury & they escaped from that town and hid in a cave
• Allah (SWT) blessed them with peace and strengthened their belief (Imaan).
• They made dua, for Allah’s mercy and right guidance
• After making dua, Allah (SWT) bestowed sleep over them, & they slept for 309 lunar years
• When they woke up, they had no idea they slept for centuries
• When they sent one of them to buy food, the shopkeeper was amazed to see such old coins
and the reality of the time they had spent in the cave gradually came to light.
• The ruling king & all the people of the town during that time were believers
• When these young men died, they were buried in the cave along with their dog.
• Some people ended up building a house of worship over the companions out of reverence.
• Allah didn’t mention exactly how many youths were there in the cave. Rather advised us not
to argue about their numbers, because we should focus on the moral of the story (18:22)
• Allah loves all His worshipers. According to Hadith, Allah will give shade to seven categories
of people on the Day of Judgement, and among them is a youth who worships Allah.
Lessons from 1st Story (TRIAL OF FAITH) :
1. People of the Cave were very SINCERE in their belief & Tauhid - did not follow the
norms and cultures of the people blindly but thought Rationally
2. When a person puts his or her belief in Allah, HE always comes to their rescue
and helps them in easing their difficulties. Trial of FAITH
3. If a believer is persecuted by a cruel society, he should not bow down before
falsehood but emigrate from the place all alone, if needed, with trust in Allah.
4. This story is a clear proof of the creed of the Hereafter – Allah has the power to
resurrect anyone He wills even after a long sleep of death.
5. We must always remain in the company of people who are good, righteous and
reminds us of Allah instead of adornments of the worldly life (18:28)
6. Never forget to say “‫ه‬ َ‫ٱّلل‬ َ‫ء‬ٓ‫ا‬َ‫ش‬َ‫ي‬ ‫ن‬َ‫“أ‬ before planning or doing any action.
7. Building places of worship over the tombs is prohibited
8. One should refrain from investigating into unimportant things, nor having
arguments & vague discussions about them

• There were two men who were owners of two gardens.
• One of them was blessed with gardens with full of harvest and land, with a
river in between. Because of his majestic gardens, he grew very arrogant.
He proudly claimed that he was wealthier and more prosperous than the
other, his ego making him delusional and heedless of Allah’s favor upon
him. He even expressed foolish confidence that these possessions would
never leave him, and the Day of Judgement will not take place, but if it were
to occur, Allah would grant him even greater possessions.
• The other righteous man condemned his act of disbelief.
• He pointed out that the ungrateful owner should have attributed his success
to Allah’s will and accepted that all power lies with Him, as God can quickly
destroy his desired possessions.
• That was precisely what happened as his precious belongings were
destroyed, leaving him in a state of despair.
• The only time the man finally remembered Allah and wished he was grateful
was when Allah took it all away.
2nd Story : The Owner of 2 Gardens : Verses 32-43
2nd Story : The Owner of 2 Gardens : Verses 32-43
Lessons from 2nd Story (TRIAL OF WEALTH) :
1. Wealth & Children in this world are all tests from Allah & everything of this
world are all temporary and transient (18:46)
2. Whatever we achieve in this world – it’s simply Allah’s mercy & blessings.
3. We should always be thankful for all of Allah’s blessings and use them for
seeking Allah’s pleasure
4. Arrogance & Ingratitude are the diseases of the heart (Shaytan’s trait)
5. KUFR = arrogance, pride, ungrateful and the denial of the HEREAFTER.
6. The one, who is neglectful of Allah and becomes a slave of his lust,
inevitably transgresses all limits and becomes a victim of Shaytan
7. A calamity which takes us closer to Allah is better than a blessing that
takes us away from HIM.
In the Middle of the Surah Allah warns us
about our eternal open enemy

Allah’s reminders:
• At the beginning and end of the surah, Allah, praises His Holy Self
and reminds us that He is the One to be praised in all circumstances.
No one can comprehend the greatness of Allah or praise Him as He
deserves to be praised, except the One who praises Himself. (18:1)
• He reminds that he sent the Quran & Prophet ‫ﷺ‬ to bring us out of the
darkness into light (18:1)
• He issues a severe warning to those who oppose Prophet ‫ﷺ‬ and
disbelieve in Quran (18:5)
• Allah reminds us “None can change His Words, and none will you
find as refuge other than Him.” (18:27)
• Allah encouraged us to have company of those who praise Him,
glorify Him, declare His greatness and call on Him, morning and
evening (18:28)
Allah’s reminders: CONT….
• Allah warned us about “wealth & children” – because these are
the adornment of this worldly life, because this world is merely a
test for us (18:7 & 18:46)
• Allah also explained in detailed about the fate of those who
follow the Shaytan and commit shirk (18:53)
• Shirk = to discard the commandments and the guidance of Allah
and to follow the orders and guidance of any other (Shaytan)
than Allah
• Allah has given all kinds of examples in the Quran, so that the
people may understand His message. (18:54)
• Allah also reminds us that He is the most Forgiving, full of mercy
(18:58)
Allah’s reminders: CONT….
• Allah also warns us about those - who worships Allah in a way that is not
acceptable, thinking that he is right in doing that and that his deeds will be
accepted, but he is mistaken and his deeds will be rejected (18:104)
• These are the two basic features of acceptable deeds:
1. Their intent is for the sake of Allah alone, and
2. Are done in accordance with the way of the Prophet ‫ﷺ‬
• Allah gives us the parable of the knowledge of all of mankind, in
comparison to the knowledge of Allah, is that of a drop of water in
comparison to all of the oceans (18:109)
• So whoever would hope for the meeting with his Lord - let him do righteous
work and not associate in the worship of his Lord anyone.(18:110)

Musa (AS) thought he was the most knowledgeable person, so Allah told him that
there was a man (Khidr) who was more knowledgeable than him. So Musa sets out to
find him and learn from him. 3 incidents between Musa & Khidr (AS) :
1. As they are traveling on a ship, Khidr destroys a part of it.
2. Next, Khidr kills a boy of a righteous parents
3. Finally, as they are in town, Khidr restores a broken wall even though the
people were not welcoming to them.
The explanation
Khidr (AS) was not performing any of these actions according to his own wishes;
rather he was following Allah’s divine revelations
1. The boat’s owners were poor, and he made a repairable hole in it to protect it from
a king who was seizing all useful boats.
2. The slain boy would go on to be a source of grief for his pious parents by sinning
and committing acts of disbelief. Hence Allah intended to replace him with a
superior, righteous child.
3. The rebuilt wall was owned by two orphans, below which their noble father had
buried a treasure. Allah wished to preserve the treasure’s secrecy so that the
orphans could safely claim it once they grew up.
3rd Story : Musa & Khidr (AS) : Verses 60-82
Lessons from 3rd Story (TRIAL OF KNOWLEDGE) :
1. The three events which took place during the meeting between Moses and Khidr
can be explained:
• A temporary calamity is always a blessings in disguise
• Allah knows – when is the best time for any event to happen
2. We should always be content with Allah’s Divine Wisdom. Because we can’t see
the unseen future.
3. We may not always understand why certain things happen, but in good times or
bad, we are to place our trust in Allah’s plan, for He is The Just.
4. Eagerness of Musa (AS) to gain knowledge. No doubt, we will be asked about
why we didn’t seek knowledge when everything was so accessible.
5. The path to seeking knowledge requires patience and humbleness. We see that
the first thing Khidr told Musa is that he wouldn’t be patient.

• Allah had blessed Dhul Qarnain with the guidance, power and resources to
accomplish monumental tasks.
• On one particular expedition, he found a group of people whom Allah ordered him to
either punish or treat gently. He punished those who committed sins and was kind to
those who didn’t.
• On his next journey, he encountered some weak people at a place between two
mountains.
• These people struggled to communicate with him but were able to request him to
build a wall in exchange for payment.
• The purpose of this wall was to protect them from the rampaging, destructive Gog
and Magog.
• Dhul Qarnayn said that Allah’s provisions for him were superior to any amount they
could offer him but asked the people to lend him men to assist.
• They were thus able to close the gap between the mountains using iron and molten
copper. This barrier sufficed their aim to repel Yajuj and Majuj, a blessing from Allah.
• However, Dhul Qarnayn also stated that Allah promised to flatten it eventually,
following which Yajuj and Majuj will wreak havoc. This will be one of the signs of the
last day.
4th Story : Dhul Qarnain : Verses 83-98
Lessons from 4th Story (TRIAL OF POWER) :
1. Dhul Qarnain had enormous power, full of authority over people
2. Despite being so powerful, Dhul Qarnain still remembered Allah with humbleness.
3. Dhul Qarnain used his power to contain corruption & lawlessness from “Yajuj
Majuj” and bring peace to the oppressed people.
4. All rulers and people in positions of power should similarly exercise justice without
any discrimination.
5. We should use our strength to assist and not exploit the weak, the way he did
when he helped the people by building a wall for them.
6. We should always try to help out
7. When the people asked Dhul Qarnain to help them, he did not just go and help
them. Rather he taught them a skill that they could learn and master themselves.
8. Just like Dhul Qarnain, do more and more good deeds.

the grave, from the torment of the Fire, from the trials and tribulations of life
and death and from the evil affliction of Al-Maseeh Ad-Dajjal”.:

Surah 18 - Al Kahf

  • 2. Revelation • Makki Surah • 110 Verses – 18th Surah – 15th & 16th Juz • Read between Thursday Maghrib to Friday Maghrib • During the severe persecution of the muslims • Surah was revealed to comfort and encourage the persecuted Muslims and to show them how the righteous people were saved/protected in the past. • Surah Kahf was revealed to answer the following 3 questions – which the mushrikeen of Makkah, in consultation with the Jews, had asked the Prophet ‫ﷺ‬ in order to test him: 1. Who were the companions of the cave? 2. What is the real story of Khidr? 3. What do you know about Dhul-Qarnain?
  • 3. The Prophet ‫ﷺ‬) ) said: "Whoever commits to memory the first ten Ayat of the Surat Al-Kahf, will be protected from (the trial of) Ad-Dajjal (Antichrist).“ [Muslim]. In another narration, the Prophet ‫ﷺ‬) ) said: "(Whoever commits to memory) the last ten Ayat of Surat Al-Kahf, he will be protected from (the trial of) Ad-Dajjal (Antichrist)." Virtues of Surah Al-Kahf A man was reciting Surat Al-Kahf, and a horse was tied with two ropes beside him. As he was reciting, a cloud overshadowed him, and as it began to come nearer and nearer, the horse began to trample violently. The man came to the Prophet ‫ﷺ‬) ) in the morning and mentioned the incident to him. He ‫ﷺ‬) ) said, "That was tranquility which descended as a result of the recitation of the Qur'an.“ [Al-Bukhari and Muslim].
  • 4. (18) Surah Al-Kahf = 4 stories In approximately the middle of the Surah comes the story of Iblees - the one who pulls the strings of fitnah. Will you then take him and his offspring as protectors and helpers rather than Me while they are enemies to you What an evil is the exchange for the wrongdoers. Verse 50 Trial of Faith The People of the Cave The story of the believing young men who were living in a disbelieving country. They decided to leave their homes and run away with their religion after a confrontation between them and their people. - Allaah rewarded them with the mercy of the cave and care + - They woke up after 309 years to find their village were all believers Verses 9-26 Trial of wealth and children The Owner of the Two Gardens The story of the man who Allaah had blessed, but he forgot the One who had blessed him, transgressed and had doubts in his faith. He didn’t give thanks for the blessings, even though his friend reminded him. - Destruction of the crops and harvest + - Regret after it was too late Verses 32-43 Trial of knowledge Musa & Khidr When Muaa was asked, “Who is the most knowledgeable person in the earth? He said, “Me” Then Allaah revealed to him that there was someone more knowledgeable than him. - Musa traveled to meet him in order to learn from him how sometimes we do not understand Allaah’s Wisdom but He is invariably Wise (i.e. – the ship, the boy, the wall) Verses 60-82 Trial of authority Dhul Qarnayn The story of the great king that joined both knowledge and strength, and traveled to all parts of the earth, helping people and spreading goodness. - He overcame the problem of Gog and Magog by building a dam and was able to put to work the strength of a people who could hardly understand a word. Verses 83-98

  • 6. 1st Story : People of the Cave : Verses 9-26 • This is the first story mentioned in Surah Al Kahf. • A group of righteous young men lived in a town, where people used to worship Idols. • The young men did not follow the people blindly but thought rationally. • When the people and the oppressive king was against their belief in worshipping ONE Allah, they decided to leave their luxury & they escaped from that town and hid in a cave • Allah (SWT) blessed them with peace and strengthened their belief (Imaan). • They made dua, for Allah’s mercy and right guidance • After making dua, Allah (SWT) bestowed sleep over them, & they slept for 309 lunar years • When they woke up, they had no idea they slept for centuries • When they sent one of them to buy food, the shopkeeper was amazed to see such old coins and the reality of the time they had spent in the cave gradually came to light. • The ruling king & all the people of the town during that time were believers • When these young men died, they were buried in the cave along with their dog. • Some people ended up building a house of worship over the companions out of reverence. • Allah didn’t mention exactly how many youths were there in the cave. Rather advised us not to argue about their numbers, because we should focus on the moral of the story (18:22) • Allah loves all His worshipers. According to Hadith, Allah will give shade to seven categories of people on the Day of Judgement, and among them is a youth who worships Allah.
  • 7. Lessons from 1st Story (TRIAL OF FAITH) : 1. People of the Cave were very SINCERE in their belief & Tauhid - did not follow the norms and cultures of the people blindly but thought Rationally 2. When a person puts his or her belief in Allah, HE always comes to their rescue and helps them in easing their difficulties. Trial of FAITH 3. If a believer is persecuted by a cruel society, he should not bow down before falsehood but emigrate from the place all alone, if needed, with trust in Allah. 4. This story is a clear proof of the creed of the Hereafter – Allah has the power to resurrect anyone He wills even after a long sleep of death. 5. We must always remain in the company of people who are good, righteous and reminds us of Allah instead of adornments of the worldly life (18:28) 6. Never forget to say “‫ه‬ َ‫ٱّلل‬ َ‫ء‬ٓ‫ا‬َ‫ش‬َ‫ي‬ ‫ن‬َ‫“أ‬ before planning or doing any action. 7. Building places of worship over the tombs is prohibited 8. One should refrain from investigating into unimportant things, nor having arguments & vague discussions about them 1st Story : People of the Cave : Verses 9-26
  • 8. 2nd Story : Verses 32-43 The Owner of the two Gardens
  • 9. • There were two men who were owners of two gardens. • One of them was blessed with gardens with full of harvest and land, with a river in between. Because of his majestic gardens, he grew very arrogant. He proudly claimed that he was wealthier and more prosperous than the other, his ego making him delusional and heedless of Allah’s favor upon him. He even expressed foolish confidence that these possessions would never leave him, and the Day of Judgement will not take place, but if it were to occur, Allah would grant him even greater possessions. • The other righteous man condemned his act of disbelief. • He pointed out that the ungrateful owner should have attributed his success to Allah’s will and accepted that all power lies with Him, as God can quickly destroy his desired possessions. • That was precisely what happened as his precious belongings were destroyed, leaving him in a state of despair. • The only time the man finally remembered Allah and wished he was grateful was when Allah took it all away. 2nd Story : The Owner of 2 Gardens : Verses 32-43
  • 10. 2nd Story : The Owner of 2 Gardens : Verses 32-43 Lessons from 2nd Story (TRIAL OF WEALTH) : 1. Wealth & Children in this world are all tests from Allah & everything of this world are all temporary and transient (18:46) 2. Whatever we achieve in this world – it’s simply Allah’s mercy & blessings. 3. We should always be thankful for all of Allah’s blessings and use them for seeking Allah’s pleasure 4. Arrogance & Ingratitude are the diseases of the heart (Shaytan’s trait) 5. KUFR = arrogance, pride, ungrateful and the denial of the HEREAFTER. 6. The one, who is neglectful of Allah and becomes a slave of his lust, inevitably transgresses all limits and becomes a victim of Shaytan 7. A calamity which takes us closer to Allah is better than a blessing that takes us away from HIM.

  • 12. Allah’s reminders: • At the beginning and end of the surah, Allah, praises His Holy Self and reminds us that He is the One to be praised in all circumstances. No one can comprehend the greatness of Allah or praise Him as He deserves to be praised, except the One who praises Himself. (18:1) • He reminds that he sent the Quran & Prophet ‫ﷺ‬ to bring us out of the darkness into light (18:1) • He issues a severe warning to those who oppose Prophet ‫ﷺ‬ and disbelieve in Quran (18:5) • Allah reminds us “None can change His Words, and none will you find as refuge other than Him.” (18:27) • Allah encouraged us to have company of those who praise Him, glorify Him, declare His greatness and call on Him, morning and evening (18:28)
  • 13. Allah’s reminders: CONT…. • Allah warned us about “wealth & children” – because these are the adornment of this worldly life, because this world is merely a test for us (18:7 & 18:46) • Allah also explained in detailed about the fate of those who follow the Shaytan and commit shirk (18:53) • Shirk = to discard the commandments and the guidance of Allah and to follow the orders and guidance of any other (Shaytan) than Allah • Allah has given all kinds of examples in the Quran, so that the people may understand His message. (18:54) • Allah also reminds us that He is the most Forgiving, full of mercy (18:58)
  • 14. Allah’s reminders: CONT…. • Allah also warns us about those - who worships Allah in a way that is not acceptable, thinking that he is right in doing that and that his deeds will be accepted, but he is mistaken and his deeds will be rejected (18:104) • These are the two basic features of acceptable deeds: 1. Their intent is for the sake of Allah alone, and 2. Are done in accordance with the way of the Prophet ‫ﷺ‬ • Allah gives us the parable of the knowledge of all of mankind, in comparison to the knowledge of Allah, is that of a drop of water in comparison to all of the oceans (18:109) • So whoever would hope for the meeting with his Lord - let him do righteous work and not associate in the worship of his Lord anyone.(18:110)

  • 16. Musa (AS) thought he was the most knowledgeable person, so Allah told him that there was a man (Khidr) who was more knowledgeable than him. So Musa sets out to find him and learn from him. 3 incidents between Musa & Khidr (AS) : 1. As they are traveling on a ship, Khidr destroys a part of it. 2. Next, Khidr kills a boy of a righteous parents 3. Finally, as they are in town, Khidr restores a broken wall even though the people were not welcoming to them. The explanation Khidr (AS) was not performing any of these actions according to his own wishes; rather he was following Allah’s divine revelations 1. The boat’s owners were poor, and he made a repairable hole in it to protect it from a king who was seizing all useful boats. 2. The slain boy would go on to be a source of grief for his pious parents by sinning and committing acts of disbelief. Hence Allah intended to replace him with a superior, righteous child. 3. The rebuilt wall was owned by two orphans, below which their noble father had buried a treasure. Allah wished to preserve the treasure’s secrecy so that the orphans could safely claim it once they grew up. 3rd Story : Musa & Khidr (AS) : Verses 60-82
  • 17. Lessons from 3rd Story (TRIAL OF KNOWLEDGE) : 1. The three events which took place during the meeting between Moses and Khidr can be explained: • A temporary calamity is always a blessings in disguise • Allah knows – when is the best time for any event to happen 2. We should always be content with Allah’s Divine Wisdom. Because we can’t see the unseen future. 3. We may not always understand why certain things happen, but in good times or bad, we are to place our trust in Allah’s plan, for He is The Just. 4. Eagerness of Musa (AS) to gain knowledge. No doubt, we will be asked about why we didn’t seek knowledge when everything was so accessible. 5. The path to seeking knowledge requires patience and humbleness. We see that the first thing Khidr told Musa is that he wouldn’t be patient. 3rd Story : Musa & Khidr (AS) : Verses 60-82

  • 19. • Allah had blessed Dhul Qarnain with the guidance, power and resources to accomplish monumental tasks. • On one particular expedition, he found a group of people whom Allah ordered him to either punish or treat gently. He punished those who committed sins and was kind to those who didn’t. • On his next journey, he encountered some weak people at a place between two mountains. • These people struggled to communicate with him but were able to request him to build a wall in exchange for payment. • The purpose of this wall was to protect them from the rampaging, destructive Gog and Magog. • Dhul Qarnayn said that Allah’s provisions for him were superior to any amount they could offer him but asked the people to lend him men to assist. • They were thus able to close the gap between the mountains using iron and molten copper. This barrier sufficed their aim to repel Yajuj and Majuj, a blessing from Allah. • However, Dhul Qarnayn also stated that Allah promised to flatten it eventually, following which Yajuj and Majuj will wreak havoc. This will be one of the signs of the last day. 4th Story : Dhul Qarnain : Verses 83-98
  • 20. Lessons from 4th Story (TRIAL OF POWER) : 1. Dhul Qarnain had enormous power, full of authority over people 2. Despite being so powerful, Dhul Qarnain still remembered Allah with humbleness. 3. Dhul Qarnain used his power to contain corruption & lawlessness from “Yajuj Majuj” and bring peace to the oppressed people. 4. All rulers and people in positions of power should similarly exercise justice without any discrimination. 5. We should use our strength to assist and not exploit the weak, the way he did when he helped the people by building a wall for them. 6. We should always try to help out 7. When the people asked Dhul Qarnain to help them, he did not just go and help them. Rather he taught them a skill that they could learn and master themselves. 8. Just like Dhul Qarnain, do more and more good deeds.
