Understanding printing techniques
1.
2. Hand printing & examples
Lino cutting part 1
• Gather equipment: Lino, roller, paper and tracing
paper, lino cutting tool, laminate paper, wooden spoon.
• Make a drawing
• Transfer it onto tracing paper
• Be very careful
• Transfer your design onto the lino
3. Hand printing & examples
Lino cutting part 2
cut sketch with the lino cutting tool we can either use a V or U cutter.
cut quite deep so when we paint it and transfer in onto the paper it
will come out properly otherwise there will be gaps in the design.
make sure your hand is behind the tool rather than in front of it, so
there is no chance of our hand getting cut.
4. Hand printing & examples
Lino cutting part 3
After this process we can choose any ink paint colored spread it out with the
roller make sure that you spread it out evenly so when we transfer it onto
the
after this we flipped the lino around onto the paper and tapped around
evenly with a wooden spoon
try not to move the lino or the paper otherwise it will ruin the slowly remove
the paper from the lino and there is the design you made.
5. What can lino printing be used for?
- Hand made cards
- Flyers
- Custom made posters
6. Lino printing- advantages and
disadvantages
Advantages
Disadvantages
It is easy to make a few
You cant make too many e.g.
1000
It is cheaper to use
It is time consuming
You can make your own
unique design
Cant be made it factory's
7. Offset lithography
Offset lithography is a method which is used for printing on flat surfaces, for this
procedure they use printing plates
After the image is transferred onto the printing plate. There are a variety of different
materials for example; paper or metal.
The plate has to be chemically treated so that the ink will only go where it needs to
The plate is then rolled onto a rubber cylinder whilst applying the ink area and in turn
the rubber cylinder which transfers the image to the paper.
8. What can offset lithography be used
for?
- Newspapers
- Magazines
9. Advantages and disadvantages of
offset lithography
An advantage of Offset lithography is it prints high quality images.
A disadvantage of Offset lithography is you can’t print small things it will
come in be quality.
A second advantage of Offset lithography is that it is the cheapest way to
make high quality printing.
A second disadvantage of Offset lithography is materials are complicated to
use.
A third advantage of Offset lithography is it sharps and cleans the images.
A third disadvantage of Offset lithography is it takes up a lot of time setting
up at first such as the factory etc.
10. What can laser printing be used for?
- Documents
- - power points
- - spread sheets
- Time tables
- Things that you would normally print off!
11. Laser printing
• Laser printing is an electronic digital printing
method which
• It creates high quality texts and graphics
• A laser beam passes over a charged drum transfer
the image to the paper
• The paper needs to be heated to permanently fix
the image.
12. Advantages and disadvantages
An advantage of Laser printing is that it is a high quality printer
A disadvantage of Laser printing is they can be quite dangerous sue to high
voltage
A second advantage of Laser printing is it is noiseless and prints fast
A second disadvantage of Laser printing is whilst laser printers have more
too in they are quite costly

Firstly we have to have all the necessary equipment; Lino, roller, paper and tracing paper, lino cutting tool, laminate paper, wooden spoon. Next we had to make a drawing, we had to take it off Google images and draw it out onto paper then transfer it onto tracing paper, while doing this be very careful and do not rush otherwise you will ruin your design and will have to start all over again. When you have finished this process sellotape down the tracing paper onto the lino to ensure that it doesn’t move while sketching out your design. Whilst sketching press hard onto the tracing paper so that when you’re redoing the lines onto the lino it will be easier as you will only have to follow the lines and will not miss any gaps out.
After sketching it out we need to cut onto the sketch with the lino cutting tool we can either use a V or U cutter. The V cutter is used for sharp lines and the U cutter is used for blunt lines. We need to cut quite deep so when we paint it and transfer in onto the paper it will come out properly otherwise there will be gaps in the design. We need to keep our hand away from the lino cutter otherwise we will cut our hands and it will hurt a lot, make sure your hand is behind the tool rather than in front of it, so there is no chance of our hand getting cut.
After this process we can choose any ink paint colored spread it out with the roller we also had to make sure that we spread it out evenly so when we transfer it onto the lino there will be no blank gaps. after this we flipped the lino around onto the paper and tapped around evenly with a wooden spoon for the sketch to come out onto the paper or we could have used a clean roller and roll around the paper again evenly, however while doing this try not to move the lino or the paper otherwise it will ruin the design and the ink will go everywhere, slowly remove the paper from the lino and there is the design you made.We had to wear aprons to ensure that the paint does not go onto our clothes otherwise it may be hard to use.
An advantage of Linocutting is very easy to make a few A disadvantage of Linocutting is you can make too many such as a 1000.A third advantage of Linocutting is it is cheaper to useA third disadvantage of Linocutting is that it is time consuming.
Offset lithography is a method which is used for printing on flat surfaces, for this procedure they use printing plates. After this procedure the image is transferred onto the printing plate. There are a variety of different materials for example; paper or metal. Furthermore the plate has to be chemically treated so that the ink will only go where it needs to ink and water is applied to the plate. Because of the chemical the ink will only stick to the mage area where the chemical is applied this rejects the water, the plate is then rolled onto a rubber cylinder whilst applying the ink area and in turn the rubber cylinder which transfers the image to the paper.
Laser printing is an electronic digital printing method which creates high quality texts and graphics through passing a laser beam over a charged drum to create a different kind of charged image. The drum will then selectively collect charged toners which will transfer the image to the paper the paper needs to be heated to permanently fix the image. The laser beam is from an aluminium gallium arsenide semiconductor laser, which develops the image to the page so it prints on the electric charged rotating drum which is covered with selenium, these days it is more common to use organic photoconductors, this allows the charge to leak from the exposed areas to the light. The powder ink particles are then electrostatically selected from the drums charged areas, this is not visible to the laser beam. Finally the drum prints the images directly to the paper from contact and heat, this fuses the ink to the paper.
An advantage of Laser printing is that it is a high quality printerA disadvantage of Laser printing is they can be quite dangerous sue to high voltageA second advantage of Laser printing is it is noiseless and prints fast A second disadvantage of Laser printing is whilst laser printers have more too in they are quite costlyA third advantage of Laser printing is most models are light weight A third disadvantage of Laser printing is it takes up a lot of space
