Learning the Basics of Being an Eagle

Introduction: All babies need the love and care of a parent in order for them to
thrive and grow. Eagles aren’t any different. In this project, your students will learn
how to become a eagle parent.

Subject Area: Science/Biology

Lesson Objectives
   1. Understand habit an eaglet needs
   2. Understand the diet of a growing eagle
   3. Understand what survival skills an eaglet must possess before it is able to
      survive independently in the wild
   4. Learn the skills needed to raise an eaglet (building a nest, finding a mate,
      hunting for food, teaching flying lessons)

Materials Needed
      An internet connection for the students to conduct their research
      Pictures (for each child) of eagles in each life cycle
      Pencils
      Bulletin board

Procedure
   1. Give each child a picture of an eagle egg. Tell them that it is their
      responsibility to take care and successfully hatch it. Have each child research
      the steps needed to hatch an eagle egg. On the back of their picture, have the
      students take notes on what they learned.
   2. Check each student’s work, if they have met the requirements for hatching an
      egg, congratulate them by giving them a picture of a baby eagle.
   3. Again, tell them it is their responsibility to raise the eaglet. Again, have them
      research the basics of taking care of an eaglet. Again, the students will take
      notes on what they’ve learned on the back of their “adopted eagle.”
   4. Once they have successfully met this requirement, congratulate them again,
      and hand them a picture of an adult eagle. This time, the students are to learn
      how to survive in the wild as an adult. They will conduct research,
      investigating what it takes to hunt, build a nest, find a mate, etc.
   5. Upon completion on the project, post all the adult eagles on a bulletin board
      for display.

Assessment Suggestions
   1. Based on the student’s research and the notes they take on the back of their
      pictures.
   2. Students can receive participation grades for completing the 3 stages of the
      activity.

Learn Basics of Being Eagle Parent

  • 1. Learning the Basics of Being an Eagle Introduction: All babies need the love and care of a parent in order for them to thrive and grow. Eagles aren’t any different. In this project, your students will learn how to become a eagle parent. Subject Area: Science/Biology Lesson Objectives 1. Understand habit an eaglet needs 2. Understand the diet of a growing eagle 3. Understand what survival skills an eaglet must possess before it is able to survive independently in the wild 4. Learn the skills needed to raise an eaglet (building a nest, finding a mate, hunting for food, teaching flying lessons) Materials Needed An internet connection for the students to conduct their research Pictures (for each child) of eagles in each life cycle Pencils Bulletin board Procedure 1. Give each child a picture of an eagle egg. Tell them that it is their responsibility to take care and successfully hatch it. Have each child research the steps needed to hatch an eagle egg. On the back of their picture, have the students take notes on what they learned. 2. Check each student’s work, if they have met the requirements for hatching an egg, congratulate them by giving them a picture of a baby eagle. 3. Again, tell them it is their responsibility to raise the eaglet. Again, have them research the basics of taking care of an eaglet. Again, the students will take notes on what they’ve learned on the back of their “adopted eagle.” 4. Once they have successfully met this requirement, congratulate them again, and hand them a picture of an adult eagle. This time, the students are to learn how to survive in the wild as an adult. They will conduct research, investigating what it takes to hunt, build a nest, find a mate, etc. 5. Upon completion on the project, post all the adult eagles on a bulletin board for display. Assessment Suggestions 1. Based on the student’s research and the notes they take on the back of their pictures. 2. Students can receive participation grades for completing the 3 stages of the activity.
