2. Plagiarism is stealing and
publication of another author’s
language, thought, ideas or
expressions and representing
them as one’s own original work.
Latin word “plagiarius” means “
kidnapper”
It is considered as a serious
ethical offence.
Plagiarism is not defined or
punished by law but rather by the
institutions.
3. Plagiarism is not the same as copyright
infringement.
Copyright infringement is violation of the
rights of a copyright holder, when a
material whose use is restricted by
copyright is used without consent.
Plagiarism, in contrast, is concerned with
obtaining academic credit through false
claims of authorship. It is a moral offense
against the plagiarist’s audiance. ( e.g- a
reader, listener or teacher)
4. Using quotations without proper
acknowledgement
Cutting and pasting from internet without
proper acknowledgement
Submitting someone’s work as their own
Taking texts from their own previous work
Inaccurately citing the source
Copying so many words or ideas from a
source that it makes up the majority of your
work, whether you give credit or not.
5.
6. You are supposed to learn and speak your
own mind, not merely to reproduce another
one’s idea.
The University may regard plagiarism as a
serious matter. Cases will be investigated and
penalties may range from deduction of marks
to expulsion from the university , depending
on the seriousness of the offence.
Even unintentional cases may be penalised
also.
7. PARAPHRASE – Read the information you have
found and put it into your own words. Make sure
that you do not copy verbatim more than two
words in a row from the original text.
CITING- Citing is entailing the author and date of
the publication.
QUOTING- when quoting a source , use it in its
exact form.
8. AVOID SELF-PLAGIARISM- If you have to use
some texts in your current research paper
from your own previous papers, then don’t
put it in its exact form. Rewrite it in a
different way.
REFERENCING- Referencing a bibliography at
the end of your research paper is very vital.
This information is very specific and includes
the authors, date of publication, title and
source. This has to be written in the proper
prescribed format.
