Systemic allergic reactions occur at sites distant to the sting and affect 0.4% to 0.8% of children and 3% of adults.1 These are IgE-mediated. Symptoms range from mild (cutaneous manifestations) to severe, with symptoms such as laryngeal edema, bronchospasm, and hypotension. Non-allergic systemic re- actions are less common and are not IgE-mediated.
