Why Recycle?
Recycling of consumer products such
as paper, glass bottles, and plastic
containers has been around for quite
awhile. Today, however, it is more in the
public consciousness than at any time in
the past. Recycling reduces waste and
is big business as well. Here are three
reasons to recycle:
Why Recycle?
- Save natural resources: Every resource on the planet is finite;
however much of it there may be, we will eventually run out.
Recycling conserves these resources and slows their
 depletion.
- Save energy: It usually requires less energy to produce
recycled products than to make products directly from extracted
materials. Making an aluminum can from scratch requires 20
times more energy than manufacturing it from recycled
materials.
- Reduce pollution: Most energy in the United States is made by
burning fossil fuels, which contributes to global climate change
and produces pollutants that reduce the length and quality of
life. Because recycling takes less energy, it produces less
pollution. Additionally, mining raw materials for things such as
aluminum cans produces toxic runoff, and producing plastic
releases toxic chemicals into the environment.
