Introduction
 India’s rich and diverse culture is one of the world’s
oldest, and dates back to 5000 years.
 India being a diverse country, every region has it’s
own distinct culture, language, art, food, music and
clothing.
 To demonstrate the legacy of my country which
would be contained in a time capsule I am going to
throw some light on the topics mentioned in the
following slides:

Architecture- Taj Mahal
 Taj Mahal is one of the seven wonders of the world in Agra,
India.
 It was built by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his
wife Mumtaz.
 It became a UNESCO world heritage site in 1983 and is
regarded as one of the finest Mughal architecture.
 The Tomb is the central focus of the Taj Mahal.
Architecture- Rani Ki Vav
 Rani Ki Vav is in Patan, Gujarat, India.
 It is the latest addition to the UNESCO world heritage site on
22nd June 2014.
 Vav means a stepwell and this step well was commissioned by
the queen of patan Udayamati in the memory of her husband
King Bhimdev of Solanki dynasty.
 The minute and exquisite carving is one of the finest work of
art and the vav is considered the queen of stepwells in India.
Architecture- Konark Sun Temple
 The Konark Sun Temple is at Konark in Odissa, India .
 It was built in the 13th century by king Narasimhadeva I of the
Eastern Ganga Dynasty.
 It has been built in the shape of a gigantic chariot with carved
stone wheel, walls and pillars.
 It is a UNESCO world heritage site and was called the Black
Pagoda by the European sailors.
 The temple has a yearly dance festival.
Fashion- Patola
 Patolas are very expensive silk sarees made at Patan in
Gujarat, India.
 It is woven in Bevad Ikat (woven on two sides) in such a
manner that it can be worn on either side.
Fashion- Patola
It is one of the most complex weaving techniques in the
world .
It takes six months to one year to make one saree and sadly
only 2-3 families make it now.
Fashion- Bandhani
 Bandhanis of Rajasthan and Gujarat are very popular.
 Bandhani is tie and dye work.
 The fabric is tied at several points and then dyed for it to give
different patterns when the knots are opened .
 It is believed that wearing a bandhani saree on the wedding
day brings good future to the bride.
Fashion- Sherwani
 Sherwani is a long coat worn by men in India .
 Indian groom spend lavishly on a sherwani for their wedding.
 Sherwani was the dress code in the mughal era.
 Sherwanis are usually made of silk fabric.
Art- S.H.Raza
 S.H.Raza is an Indian born artist living in Paris.
 He is known for his abstract style of painting with icons form the
Indian cosmology and its philosophy.
 He became the priciest Indian artist on 10th June 2010 when his
work “Saurashtra” was sold for Euro 2 million plus.
 He has been awarded the Padma Shree, Padma Bhushan and the
Padma Vibhushan (The fourth, third and second highest civilian
award.
Art- F.N.Souza
 Francis Newton Souza was an Indian artist.
 He was the first post independence artist to achieve high recognition
in the west.
 He was a founding member of the Progressive Artists Group Of
Mumbai
 His famous painting is “Birth” which was sold for $ 2.5 Million and
it set a world record of the most expensive Indian painting.
Art- Raja Ravi Varma
 Raja Ravi Varma was an Indian artist from Kerala.
 He achieved recognition for the depiction of scenes from the Indian
epic Ramayan and Mahabharat.
 He is known for his paintings of saree clad women portrayed as
shapely and graceful.
Music- Bismillah Khan
 Bismillah Khan was an Indian musician know for playing the
Shehnai ( Indian wind instrument).
 Shehnai was an instrument played at Indian folk and traditional
ceremonies, It was Bismillah Khan who elevated its status and
brought it to the concert stage.
 Bismillah Khan has received the Bharat Ratna which is the highest
civilian award in 2001.
Music- Pandit Ravi Shankar
 Pandit Ravi Shankar was an Indian musician known for his skills of
playing the Sitar (Indian string instrument).
 Shankar promoted the Jugalbandi duet concert style.
 Pandit Ravi Shankar has received the Bharat Ratna, Padma
Vibhushan and Padma Bhushan (First, Second and Third highest
civilian award).
Music- Zakir Hussain
 Zakir Hussain is an Indian musician known for playing the Tabla.
 Zakir was a child prodigy and started touring at the age of11.
 He has composed music for many movies, most notably In Custody
and The Mystic Masseur.
 The album “The global drum project”, which he was a part of
won the Grammy award for best contemporary world music
album at the 51’st Grammy awards.
