Installation: One of drastic change is in the Installation of Project Server. In Project Server 2013 requires different installation of SharePoint Server and Project Server but Project Server 2016 is part of SharePoint Server 2016 Enterprise Edition and after SharePoint Server 2016 installation , you can configure Project Server 2016. Activating Project Server 2016 will require an activation key
Base Languages Installation and Packs: In Project Server 2013 both SharePoint and Project Server need to be installed separately. But now as there is only one installation for SharePoint and Project Server 2016, so the base language automatically matched for both.
Note: there is one case in which base language is different: if SharePoint server 2016 is installed in Thai then Project Server 2016 will have English as its base Language.
Hardware and Software requirement: Project Server 2016 is now a service application in SharePoint Server 2016, the hardware, software, and browser requirements for Project Server 2016 will be the ones specified for SharePoint Server 2016
Client Compatibility: In Project Server 2016, we can connect it not only with Project Professional 2016 Client, Project Pro in Office365 but also with Project 2013.
Note: one drawback is that if we are using Resource Engagement (which we will discuss later in our webinar) we have new Resource plan view which is not Project 2013 for that we need to use Project Professional 2016.
Consolidated database for multiple instance: In previous versions of Project Server there were separate database of each PWA instance but in Project Server 2016 there is single SharePoint content database that will be used by all the PWA instances. All data from different instances will be saved in single database where SharePoint automatically isolates every instance of PWA.
Ease of database operations: As all the data is stored in single database, so it becomes easier to perform various database operation like backup and restore, migration and many more.
Multiple timeline views of a project: In Project Professional 2016, we can have multiple timeline to show different views of a project.
Formatting timeline view: In Project 2016 we can format the timeline by using multiple color/font to different bars, we can add our custom text for more clarity of tasks and we can also arrange the tasks of project.
Lock the timeline width: This feature allow to see the timeline for your project in the way you have intended. If you do not lock the timeline width, the width will vary based on the size of the window being used to view the timeline
Callout in timeline: You might choose to display phases as callouts on the timeline, and tasks as bars on the timeline
Resource Engagement:
This feature is used by resource managers and project managers to make an agreement, called a resource engagement, to make sure that resources are being used appropriately and effectively throughout your organization.
Resource manager decides who needs approval: Resource Manager identify some resources as requiring approval to be assigned to projects.
Project manager requests a resource: Project Manager has to submit an Engagement Request to resource manager using Project Professional 2016 with the date range when resource is need.
Reviews the request: Resource Manager reviews the request and will accept the request if resource is available. Resource manager can adjust the dates, change the percentage or hours, or even swap out the resource altogether for another resource with better availability and resend the request for review to project manager. Project manager can resubmit request after changes or rejection
Resource utilization as a visualization: For an organization, resource utilization is very important for which Project Server 2016 has introduce its new feature “the capacity Heat maps”. Heat maps provides you with both the information that whether a resource in under-allocated or over-allocated which helps manager in doing proper allocation.
Helpful in reporting: Heat maps in itself gives the intuitive visualization of showing resource allocation and utilization.
Project ID: Project Server 2016 gives new the feature of “Project ID” associated with EPT, while create a new Enterprise Project Type Project Server 2016 gives an option of generating Project ID with every project created from particular EPT. For creating Project ID, you can only give number and Digits padding that how to increase the ID apart from this you can also assign Prefix and Postfix with ID.
Not GUID only ID: In the previous versions of Project Server there was hidden ID of every project that is GUID, which obviously can’t be displayed in front but by this feature which give users a way to filter out there projects.
UpdateCustomFields: Previously, workflows could only update one custom field at a time and. Each update required a separate server request and updating multiple custom fields was overhead. To resolve this issue add new UpdateCustomFields method to the REST API
CreateProjectSite method allow user choose when to create project sites instead of creating while first time project is getting published
postponing project site creation significantly improves the performance of creating a project.
