Editor's Notes
- We should push the manufacturers to produce a larger range of mobile phones that can run similar software add-ons. It could be done by voluntary actions that we have been encouraging so far, but also via European standardisation. That's why the European Commission has mandated European standardisation organisations to work out European standards for accessibility of ICT goods and services, including mobile devices. They will be used by public procurers but also to be available for private parties. And we encourage the direct dialogue between industry and operators, with end-users organisations. For example we welcome the EU Accessibility Awards, with 4 categories (social participation, independent living, mobility and wellbeing) that have been launched by the Vodafone Foundation together with EDF and AGE. We encourage Member States to improve the information about accessible equipment. They could be helped by the initiative of the Mobile Manufacturers' Forum (today present): the Global Accessibility Reporting Initiative (GARI) and their public database on accessibility.
