5. Introduction - to welfare
• Facilities are air-conditioned.
• Personal use of shower, lockers, fridge, drinking water,
kettle and microwave facilities.

issues back to the site management.

6. Introduction - to traffic routes
• Vehicle and pedestrian traffic routes and site car parking
areas.
7. Laing O’Rourke DVD
• Explore Living are part of the Laing O’Rourke Group, and
LOR want everyone involved with a LOR site to go home as
safe and healthy as when they arrive in the morning – if not
better!
• The LOR induction video will run for about 20 mins, and
explain some of the mandatory Health, Safety and
Environmental standards and requirements of Laing
O’Rourke and hence Explore Living.
• There will be a short (multiple choice) questionnaire at the
end, with an 80% pass mark necessary to permit work on
site.

8. Health
Does anyone have any medical condition that Explore Living
Management should be made aware of (eg: epileptic,
diabetic etc.) ?

One of the key risk areas we are focussing on at the moment is
manual handling; the following preventative advice may
be helpful.

10. Site Rules
Site Rules Include:
PPE – mandatory requirement:: hat / hi-viz / boots / gloves / glasses
Specific tasks may require additional protection (eg grinding, cutting, welding…).
Specific risk assessment should specify details.
Clothing - No shorts or cropped trousers are allowed; legs must be covered at all times,
High Vis vests must not be cut down or worn around waist.
No Smoking - smoking is NOT permitted on site, except in designated areas by the satellite welfare unit and the
main compound. Similarly, eating / drinking is NOT permitted on site, except in designated welfare units.
Radios / mobile phones – NO radios or personal stereos are allowed on site.
Phones are not banned, but must be used responsibly.
Permits - If your task involves a naked flame of any kind, a ”Hot Works Permit” must be obtained, each day,
before work commences.
If your task involves excavation or entry into a “confined space” a permit is also required.
Electrical tools – must be regularly inspected and have proof of PAT testing.
Batteries can be charged using the charging station under the stairs to the office.
(Note: Explore Living cannot be held responsible for any loss or damage to equipment whilst using this facility)
110 volt transformers will be provided on each floor of the flats with connection points outside each entrance for
all to use.
All power requirements for the houses will be by generator supplied by the trade.
Leads must not be connected from the flats and run outside for power requirements.
Enforcement – Explore Living management adopts a ‘zero tolerance’ approach to compliance with site rules.
Where necessary, this will be enforced through the use of “Behavioural Incident” notices

11. Emergency Arrangements
Fire
Raising the alarm…
What to do if you hear the alarm…
Location of “muster points”
Restricted approach to fire fighting…
Extinguishers should only be used if you believe the fire is small
enough to be extinguished safely.
If there is any doubt, evacuate the area immediately to the
appropriate muster point, giving warning to others in that area and
sounding the nearest fire bell.
Then contact Explore Living Site Management who will call the
Fire Service.

It is important to record every injury, in the Explore Living Accident
Book, however minor.

Explore Living Management is always available to respond
positively to any concerns regarding health and safety.
16. Waste Management
Waste management:
Everyone is responsible for tidying as they go, and to ensure each
place of work is left clean at the end of each operation and when
packing up for the day.
Concrete / hardcore and plasterboard is separated;
…so is food waste.
Brick bands, plastics and timber etc. are classified as “general
waste”.
If any working area is not cleaned up on the day then Explore
Living labour will take the task on and charge the relevant
contractor £100 for each occasion.
If the situation continues after 2 warnings, individual workers
involved will be asked to leave site.
17. Waste Management
