Heart, Soul and Spirit: The heart chakra, (Anahata in Sanskrit) colors our life with compassion, love, and beauty,
driven by the principles of transformation and integration, this fourth energy center is said to bridge earthly and
spiritual aspirations.
You need to know who you are, what you love, what your sources of inspiration are, what moves you, your heart,
mind and spirit? You cannot inspire others unless you get inspired yourself.
What touches people most are not our words but our actions when they represent the values we hold dear
You need to know your values.
Values based approaches:
Mohammad Ali : confidence, conviction, dedication, respect, giving and spirituality.
Olympic Values: Respect, Fair play and friendship , Joy of effort, Pursuit of excellence, Balance between body, will
&mind.
Paralympic Values: Sport people as Role models: Courage, determination, inspiration, equality.
Universal Values : Love, care forgiveness , respect, service, honesty

Mentorship
Mentoring is a vital element in youth development and sport/athletes development
programmes
It occurs when a mentor is willingly invests time in the personal development of a
student or athlete, when a trusting relationship evolves, when a mentorship plan gets
developed when needs and interests are recognised, understood and fulfilled, and
understanding of behaviour takes place.
Mentoring Success principles (Brene Brown) :
Commitment – time, process and vulnerability
Meetings - frequency, preparation, goals and expectation
Process – active listening, powerful questions, feedback and
Review – what is working well, what needs to change, review goals, celebrate success

management, monitoring and evaluation.
 With the mentees providing practical support to communities in the field of sport,
development and peace, gender and sport, life skills, project management, monitoring
and evaluation.

Mentoring
• Mentoring started for me in my home with my parents.
• My parents instilled a love for reading in my siblings
• Later it expanded to older cousins and uncles and aunt.
• The stories, parables and words of wisdom they tell and dispense is also
mentoring because they give life lessons.

• At school, your teachers are your immediate mentors with the family still in the back.
• Older scholars, members of societies and teams you belong to all mentor you.
• Sometimes it is subliminally, and you don’t even realise you are being mentored .
• My teachers took me to teacher sport meetings from the age of 15.
• I was asked to take the minutes, I thought it was a chore.
• Today I am a better government administrator because I learnt the value of minute taking, motions,
proposals and the ability to capture the essence.

• At university, lecturers and other students can also be mentors.
• I am still in touch with many of my university mentors.
• Prof Marion is one of my mentors and I can bounce ideas around with her.
• Mentors add to your thinking and influence your decision making.
• Mentors add different perspectives you may have missed or underplayed.

• Mentors do not need to have an education.
• Mentors use their life experience to dispense with your advice.
• You do not need a formal relationship.
• My wife’s granny is 85 and I see her as one of my mentors.
• Every day I drink tea with her after work and she will ask me things and we will
chat.
• So without me realizing she became a mentor to me because of her lifelong
experience.

• Nurture the relationships
• It doesn’t have to be formal
• Mentoring can be horizontal ( with peers)
• Or vertical

• In sport mentoring can even be with players or athletes that
may not be as strong as you are.
• They can however add their understanding.
• They can influence your technique.
• Mentors can also be religious that influence how you conduct
your life.

• I think it’s important to mentor and to be mentored.
• No one knows everything.
• Appreciate the fact that different people bring different
contexts to situations.

Nelson Mandela "Service to others is the rent you pay for your room here on earth." Muhammad Ali Heart, Soul and Spirit: The heart chakra, (Anahata in Sanskrit) colors our life with compassion, love, and beauty, driven by the principles of transformation and integration, this fourth energy center is said to bridge earthly and spiritual aspirations. You need to know who you are, what you love, what your sources of inspiration are, what moves you, your heart, mind and spirit? You cannot inspire others unless you get inspired yourself. What touches people most are not our words but our actions when they represent the values we hold dear You need to know your values. Values based approaches: Mohammad Ali : confidence, conviction, dedication, respect, giving and spirituality. Olympic Values: Respect, Fair play and friendship , Joy of effort, Pursuit of excellence, Balance between body, will &mind. Paralympic Values: Sport people as Role models: Courage, determination, inspiration, equality. Universal Values : Love, care forgiveness , respect, service, honesty

Mentorship Mentoring is a vital element in youth development and sport/athletes development programmes It occurs when a mentor is willingly invests time in the personal development of a student or athlete, when a trusting relationship evolves, when a mentorship plan gets developed when needs and interests are recognised, understood and fulfilled, and understanding of behaviour takes place. Mentoring Success principles (Brene Brown) : Commitment – time, process and vulnerability Meetings - frequency, preparation, goals and expectation Process – active listening, powerful questions, feedback and Review – what is working well, what needs to change, review goals, celebrate success MENTORSHIP PLAN Mentorship Objectives: Activities: Progress: Objective 3: To act as facilitator and coach to establish a Club Time allocation:20%  Initial planning and agreement  Strategic and business plan  Club members recruitment  Programme for the Year  Reporting and evaluation

Capacity building in terms of Leadership Development and Mentorship in the field of Sport, Development & Peace  Providing Mentorship  Providing Career Guidance  Providing Guidance for Entrepreneurs and small business  Providing leadership skills and supporting young athletes to reach their potential  Providing possibilities for young athletes to attend webinars, seminars, workshops, conferences on sport , development and peace, gender and sport, life skills, project management, monitoring and evaluation.  With the mentees providing practical support to communities in the field of sport, development and peace, gender and sport, life skills, project management, monitoring and evaluation.

Be part of the process that brings positive change - Capacity Building and Leadership Development Use a values based approach There is something great about everyone - treat people as special and unique Develop a detailed Mentorship Plan with your Mentee Passion and enthusiasm, courage, commitment, love and care are infectious – show them wherever you go and whatever you do ! New section heading Mentoring • Mentoring started for me in my home with my parents. • My parents instilled a love for reading in my siblings • Later it expanded to older cousins and uncles and aunt. • The stories, parables and words of wisdom they tell and dispense is also mentoring because they give life lessons.

New section heading Mentoring cont.. • At school, your teachers are your immediate mentors with the family still in the back. • Older scholars, members of societies and teams you belong to all mentor you. • Sometimes it is subliminally, and you don’t even realise you are being mentored . • My teachers took me to teacher sport meetings from the age of 15. • I was asked to take the minutes, I thought it was a chore. • Today I am a better government administrator because I learnt the value of minute taking, motions, proposals and the ability to capture the essence.

New section heading Mentoring cont.. • At university, lecturers and other students can also be mentors. • I am still in touch with many of my university mentors. • Prof Marion is one of my mentors and I can bounce ideas around with her. • Mentors add to your thinking and influence your decision making. • Mentors add different perspectives you may have missed or underplayed.

New section heading Mentoring cont.. • Mentors do not need to have an education. • Mentors use their life experience to dispense with your advice. • You do not need a formal relationship. • My wife’s granny is 85 and I see her as one of my mentors. • Every day I drink tea with her after work and she will ask me things and we will chat. • So without me realizing she became a mentor to me because of her lifelong experience.
  • 12. New section heading Mentoring cont.. • Nurture the relationships • It doesn’t have to be formal • Mentoring can be horizontal ( with peers) • Or vertical
  • 13. New section heading Mentoring cont.. • In sport mentoring can even be with players or athletes that may not be as strong as you are. • They can however add their understanding. • They can influence your technique. • Mentors can also be religious that influence how you conduct your life.
  • 14. New section heading Mentoring cont.. • I think it’s important to mentor and to be mentored. • No one knows everything. • Appreciate the fact that different people bring different contexts to situations.

To grow, we must be teachable, and surrender to the process and journey with hope in our hearts and minds Say yes: As every task, activity, project and duty in the workplace is a potential opportunity to expand the self Ask for help: If you don’t know how, someone else will and most times, they will teach you. Ask and you shall receive. Stay in touch: From time to time, send out an email, say hi and keep your connections alive. Collaborate: Combining ideas leads to change on bigger scales. Collaboration is recommended for all young people. Take stock: After each day, do some self- reflection, and imagine a world that you can be a part of, where young people are mentored, guided and appreciated. Where have you come from, where are you now, and where do you want to go?
