The History of The Thriller Genre

2. 1920’s- 1930’s
• 1926- a man called Alfred Hitchcock released his third silent thriller
called The Lodger which was a Jack the Ripper story filled with
suspense.
• 1929- Alfred Hitchcock released yet another thriller film called
Blackmail which was the first thriller with sound.
• 1931- the German director Fritz Lang released a film called The
Chilling, the film was based on a serial killer.
• 1933- yet another crime thriller was released called Murder’s In The
Zoo, this was directed by Edward Sutherland.
3. 1940’s- 1960’s
• 1940- Alfred Hitchcock released another thriller film. He released,
which then won Oscars. It was called Foreign Correspondent.
• 1953- Henry Hathaway released a film called Niagara which stared
Marilyn Monroe who played a character plotting to kill her husband.
• 1954- Dial M for murder was a film brought out about a man plotting
to kill his wife.
• 1960- Alfred Hitchcock released a disturbing thriller called Psycho
which left the audience on the edge of there seats. It was about a
murder who owned a motel.
4. 1970’s- 1990’s
• 1972- After 2 decades of foreign films, Hitchcock released an English
film The Frenzy and is was shocking and violent and had high
certificate ratings everywhere it was shown.
• 1989- Philip Noyce released a film called Dead Calm staring Nicole
Kidman this film influenced many of the 1990’s thriller films because of
its obsession within the film and the idea of the characters being
trapped.
• 1991- Jonathan Demme released probably the most famous
psychological thriller of the decade called Silence of The lambs.

5. 2000’s
• 2001- The film Hannibal was released it is a crime thriller directed by
Ridley Scott
• 2006- The Da Vinci Code, is directed by Ron Howard, this is more of a
psychological thriller. This was a book first wrote by Dan Brown.
• 2008- Eden Lake, this a cross between a thriller and horror, it has both
elements of a horror film, but also puts you on the edge of seat. This
was directed by James Watkins.
• 2009- Angels and demons which is also a book by Dan Brown, it is also
a psychological thriller.
6. 2010’s
• 2011- Abduction was released and this is quite a modern thriller
with an all star cast and was directed by John Singleton.
• 2013- The Purge was released and this is a horror thriller, as the
movie industry progresses the more horror thrillers appear.
• 2014- The house October Built, this is also a horror thriller
• 2016- The Girl on The Train is a psychological thriller that
entices the audience and really gets them to think. This was
directed by Tate Taylor, and had an all star cast.
