  1. HP believes that the short-term benefits of a Trilogy lie in the ability of an organization to build its own set of infrastructure that offers cloud computing–type services within the walls of its own datacenters. These "private clouds" of computing provide a service-based approach to IT delivery yet are able to manage existing security and compliance issues that are not yet fully covered with external providers offering shared infrastructure. Over time, as service providers build their shared infrastructure environments, IT organizations may choose to federate some of their applications and data to a public cloud or outsource entirely with SLAs for security, availability, and performance. Cloud computing is as much a business phenomenon as it is a technological one. Most industries will be affected by cloud computing as it catches on and is embraced by the mainstream. I classify the importance of cloud computing to business in two broad categories: operational and strategic. But before I jump into details, a quick general note. Increasingly, industries are driven by IT. From manufacturing to travel & shipping to telecommunications to financial services, growing aspects of the business run on computers and software. So much so, that some industries, such as capital markets trading are primarily technology businesses. With that in mind, if we accept that cloud computing is a "once in a decade" kind of innovation, then surely it will have a significant impact on a multitude of businesses. An obvious previous example of this is the Internet. But still, the question remains if cloud computing should be primarily the concern of the IT execs. After all, much of it is about deep technical issues (or so it is perceived) and many of the business execs lack the knowledge of those details to make a contribution to the decision-making -- or so some have suggested. In conclusion, cloud computing is a game-changer, both technologically and business-wise and wise business execs should understand the forces that will impact their industry. It’s not just about IT anymore. It’s a different operational model. Clients see cloud as strategic and must-have vision for the future of IT. Hard dollar savings is still top of the list, partly because economic uncertainty still continues to an extent. However , flexibility and speed-to-market for new services is the real business need mentioned after cost savings. IT organizations feel they are behind the business and there is still a way to go to become a true service provider. Understanding this service provider model is important in these cloud discussions.

As a new cycle for enterprise technologies emerges, IT organizations will find that they need to think differently about not just their systems but also their operations, policies, processes, people, and strategy. This type of transformation requires not only that IT groups be able to take a holistic view of technology as servers, networks, storage, and management tools converge but also that suppliers be able to offer and bring together a broad set of technology solutions.   4. Cloud computing is the hottest topic to talk about these days between IT people. Some really flatter the words while at the same time some others are a bit gun shy to talk about it. Cloud computing has been seen as the next step for the IT. Will it really help IT to be the “GPS of Business”. Are we really there now? I would like to divide the cloud hype into three main group as; Virtualization, Private Clouds (Internal Clouds), Public Clouds. It all started by virtualization of x86 machines. In today’s distributed environments, where up to 85 percent of computing capacity sits idle, there is a tremendous amount of waste, waste that companies no longer can afford. Maintaining current IT infrastructure sucks up about 70 percent of today’s IT budgets while new solutions and capabilities go begging. So, there was a big utilization problem and virtualization solved it successfully. Now, it is a main stream approach and has been already applied by enterprises. The ability to consolidate large server farms and better utilize hardware is a proven route to significant cost savings, and may also assist with corporate green initiatives in reducing CO2 emissions. Second step, after virtualization is Private Clouds (Internal Clouds).  Because using already virtualized servers containing pre-defined content from templates can help organizations to scale swiftly, be more agile and react to market demands as they change. Simplifying the data center requires the IT silos to be brought together into pools of virtualized assets that are shared by many applications and services. It’s not just the convergence of virtualized servers, storage systems, and network connections. It also requires bringing together management tools and processes so resources can be managed in a holistic, integrated manner. And to tackle the growing complexity and cost of energy, there needs to be a synergistic link between power, cooling and facilities with IT. To bring this all together, customers need to have the right architecture. With Trilogy, they can either build their own private clouds (internal clouds) or sell cloud based hosting, computing capacity or storage solutions to the market. Last step, after private clouds, is Public Cloud. To make it more appealing, I would like to simulate The Cloud by Lego pieces. I think many of you know Lego, which you use to build your own shapes. In the basic Lego packages there are pre-defined, pre-shaped pieces. But, by using those pieces people can build almost endless special shapes. At the very end, enterprises will be able to select different software pieces and integrate them with each other to build their own specific solutions. Every component will be able to work perfectly with each other without requiring major changes. But, public Cloud is currently ideal for mostly young businesses seeking uncomplicated IT hosting with minimal outlay and no complicated contracts. The ability of most public cloud offerings to scale effortlessly is particularly attractive for websites and applications that have either seasonal demand, or unpredictable traffic. Another quite separate use of Virtual Servers hosted in the Public Cloud is for test and development of applications and User Acceptance Testing (UAT). The flexibility for coders to create new Cloud servers in a matter of minutes and to be billed only for what they use makes this attractive to any software development organization. To sum up, public clouds are suitable only for the startups or non-critical applications/data of enterprises. It still needs few years before we really see cloud solutions in the main market.
  5. After all, I position Virtualization in the Early Majority, Private Clouds in the Early Adopters and Public Clouds in the Innovators segment at the TALC as you can see from the graph above. Virtualization is an effective and proven technology in the market now. After virtualization, enterprises will start building their own clouds (Private Clouds) and after that step, I think we will see more and more public cloud solutions in the main market. But, the real final will always be a mix of internal and external clouds. Where entreprises build their ”shapes” by using internal and/or external pre-defined, shared resources. Virtualization is actually much more than a tactical cost-cutting trend. Virtualization must be seen strategically as a catalyst of overall IT change and modernization. These changes position IT more as a service provider for the business, helps IT behave more like a cloud provider, and prepares the business to be a better consumer of cloud computing. Virtualization should be approached strategically, as a modernization catalyst with far reaching technology, process, people and business ramifications. Virtualization enables four of the five attributes of a cloud computing provider: service based, scalable and elastic, shared and metered by use. Virtualization is not the only path to cloud computing, but it will be one of the most important and common on-ramps to the cloud computing style (both public and private cloud).

The ongoing management of this sprawling infrastructure has led to spiraling costs, and the time required for testing and tuning during deployment has led to a drain on available staff resources and ability to quickly realize business value. Server virtualization is now mainstream, while deduplication technologies and tiered storage are helping to lower the burden on information systems. As a result, many are rethinking their plans for 10GbE adoption and virtual I/O technologies as network performance becomes a critical gating factor for a server and storage rearchitecture. In addition, aging datacenter facilities have forced IT organizations to introduce supplemental power and cooling equipment and deploy energy management strategies. While these individual technologies are helping to lower up-front capital costs, they have not yet helped to lower management overhead, and their introduction requires significant integration investments. With the sprawl in IT systems, many customers find themselves with a complex and inflexible set of infrastructure that limits their ability to respond to changes in the business. For many, the goal of offering "IT as a service" remains elusive, and their legacy infrastructure is an increasingly larger part of their IT maintenance budget that constrains the ability of IT departments to launch new projects and innovate. HP believes that the next technology cycle will have a converged architecture as a central design feature and that efficiency, high performance, and the ability to quickly rightsize the infrastructure relative to application and business demands will be critical. The movement to integrated or converged technology is not new. We have seen this trend in the server market twice in the past 30 years, and our market data indicates that we are at the very beginning of the next phase in IT. This next business cycle is "service centric" and has a very clear set of objectives: simplify and reduce complexity, maximize resource utilization, and shorten time to market to more quickly realize business value. LEFT SIDE OF SLIDE - Sprawl For two decades, IT organizations have been adding servers, storage, and networking devices to keep pace with business demand for applications and the terabytes of data they generate. The problem is, because of the sprawl, those resources are tangled up in legacy architectures and inflexible stacks of IT. The result is that the average business spends 70% of the IT budget on operations versus innovation … bringing businesses to the breaking point. This sprawl has a wide-reaching ripple effect across the business. This enables customers to rebalance their ‘Cost-Innovation’ ratio by realigning today’s traditional technology silos and bringing all IT resources together into adaptive pools that can be shared by any application … optimized and managed as a service … and automatically deliver what is needed, when it is needed, and without relying on more people. The converged infrastructure has been discussed for several years now. We think the HP Converged Infrastructure can bring the reality … and benefits … of matching the supply of IT resources with the demand for business applications in the most optimal way. To achieve this, everything must be simplified. Customers will need to choose their suppliers carefully and should look for a vendor that can provide a holistic set of IT infrastructure, software, and services offerings to bring this future vision together
