2. LOCATION
Almeria is a Spanish province of Andalusia; located in the
southeast of the Iberian Peninsula. It limits with the provinces
of Granada to the west and the northwest; and with Murcia to
the north and northeast; as well as with the Mediterranean
Sea to the east and south (part known as the Alboran Sea).
The capital of the province is the city of Almería, located in the
south of the province and in the center of the homonymous
bay.

3. Natural Conditions of Agriculture
The sea and the desert coexist with the most fertile and productive orchard of the continent.
Drylands, where survival becomes a permanent challenge; salty lagoons in which nests a
varied fauna and plant species, unique in our planet, await those who visit this province
endowed with a subtropical, Mediterranean, warm and dry climate

6. Specific of Agriculture and Food
Insdustry
•The agriculture sector in Almería corresponds mainly to
intensive agricultural production that has a high productivity
since they mainly use greenhouses to grow the products.
Next to this activity, a new industry has been created and
developed, composed of a series of companies dedicated to
the production and marketing of cultivated vegetables, as
well as any other service that has an added value and
complements this activity.
•This sector began to develop in Almería in the sixties and has
developed continuously until today, to become a world
reference. With the excellent weather conditions, Almeria is
the area with the most hours of sunshine in Europe, which
allows to produce all kinds of vegetables naturally.

7. Share agrobusiness in Almeria´s
economy
•No other Spanish province has a Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in the agricultural sector higher
than Almeria, where this concept exceeds 1,995,145,000 euros. This is clear from the data
updated by the INE.
•Agriculture accounts for 40% of Almeria's provincial GDP. It is difficult to find a territory in Spain
with so much weight of agriculture. It would be broken down as follows.
•A.- Greenhouse agriculture. 1,782 million euros.
•B.- Manipulation and fruit and vegetable commercialization. € 2,698 million.
•C.- Agricultural auxiliary industry. € 1,600 million.
•A + B + C = 40% GDP

9. Share agrobusiness in Almeria´s
economy
•Part of the great success of this model, in relation to marketing is
due to organizations that deal with the management of
production and the destination distribution line. There has been
a development in marketing structures, together with the
growth of horticultural production, and this progress has
contributed significantly to increase the added value generated
by the intensive cultivation of the provincial economy
•At the beginning of this type of production, the new companies
emerged looked to the markets of Europe and were able to
assume their level of demand. It meant that this sector has
always known first-hand the characteristics of demand,
competitors, other production technologies and the need to
invest in the development of human capital. This has generated
a very high level in this sector and the recognition of it.

11. Value of Investment
The tomato is the most relevant vegetable, it produces more
than one million tons and half is exported. Almería is the first
tomato export province in Spain, representing 57% of the
national total. The pepper is the second most important
product, its production totals 665,000 tons of which 75% is
exported. In fact, the pepper of Almeria represents 72% of
the national total exported. The cucumber, zucchini and
watermelon have similar production figures, around 430,000
tons, exporting 100%, in the case of cucumber, 63% of
courgette and 78% of watermelon. The province represents
70% of all the cucumber exported by Spain, 85% of the
courgette and 46% of the watermelon.

Almería has an excellent raw material, a great diversity of quality
products, an innovative agri-food sector that is the only reference in
the world and the creativity of its restaurateurs.
