5. PRESENTCONDITION OF JUTEEXPORT
Bangladesh provides over 70% of the world’s raw
jute .
Each year ranges between 300,000 and about
350,000 tons.
In recent years the quantity of exporting Jute
goods is higher in comparing with the other
countries and it is increasing day by day.
6. J JUTE INDUSTRY IN BANGLADESH
It is a major Cash Crop for over three million small
farm households, the largest industry, largest
agricultural export commodity in Bangladesh. The
livelihood of about 25 million people (almost one -
fifth of the total population) is dependent on jute.
Major objectives of the present study are:
To understand the changes in structure and
composition of jute manufacturing sector of
Bangladesh.
To study economic, technological and worker related
issues of jute mills.
To identify opportunities and challenges in Jute
sector.
8. Jute industry in Bangladesh has Been
facing several problems.
Unavailability of jute seed
• Farmers are using poor quality of seed
that results lower productivity.
Increase in the cost of productions
• Higher production cost compared
to competing countries
Labor problems
• Wages of labor do not pay in right time
so they are not interested to do job in
jute mills.
9. Low price of raw jute
• The farmers are losing interest to continue
production of jute because of low price of
raw jute.
Lack of practical experience
• Lack of practical experience for jute retting
in modern system.
Loss of competitiveness in the export
market
• Lack of skilled labor and skilled designers in
the jute sector leads to production of
inferior quality products resulting in

12. Reopen many of The Closed Mills

The Govt. of Bangladesh banned production,
sale and use of polythene from 01 March,
2002. As a result the demand of Jute & Jute
goods is increasing.

Khan, presently working as scientific advisor of
BJMC.
BJMC and Futamura Chemical Ltd., a UK-based
company, signed contract for producing "sonali
bag’ commercially.
15. JUTE GEO TEXTILE
Earlier, all the geo-textiles were manufactured by
synthetic fiber. But this is harmful for the
environment. Jute geo-textile (geo-jute) is one of the
most popular natural geo-textile.
Geo-textile is one of the most rapidly growing
sectors. During the period 2000-2005 the rate of
growth was 4.6% and during2005-2010 the rate is
5.3%.
16. KEY RECOMMENDATIONS
Encouragement of domestic use of jute
goods, enhancing research and development
activities.
Ensuring adequate funds for repayment of all
arrears of workers and dues to suppliers.
Jute seeds should be available at farmers’
level.
Encourage to produce Jute-geo textile.
17. The Government should take strategic
policy measures for the promotion of jute
sector in short, medium and long terms.
Creating a technology up-gradation fund
for the jute sector.
18. CONCLUSION
Bangladesh can claim as a country of jute as
everywhere in this country jute can be grown.
Bangladesh has got relative advantage on the
production of best quality jute fiber. Only the
production and marketing of jute bags and sacks
cannot ensure the sector’s stability and prosperity.
However, more research needs to be conducted for
the development of new products and technologies.
