2. 2014 starts out right for AMC staff
veterinarian Leilani Alvarez who is
named AMC New Yorker of the
week by NY1 News. The story
highlighted Dr. Alvarez’s work with
a paralyzed rabbit named Ariel.

3. The plight of stray dogs at the Sochi Olympics
captured the hearts of Team USA who hid
dogs in hotel rooms and unsnarled Russian
red tape to save dogs from certain death.

4. The AMC hosted the 6th
Advanced Renal Therapies
Symposium. Nearly 150
veterinarians learned about
recent research, advanced
technologies and medical
breakthroughs in veterinary
nephrology, presented by
eighteen of the world’s most
distinguished experts in both
human and veterinary medicine.

5. North America’s first cat
café opens in Lower
Manhattan as a pop-up
shop. Meow Parlor, a
permanent café opened
in November in
Chinatown. The cats of
Meow Parlor are
available for adoption.

6. Tara, believed to be an average
cat, shows her moxie when she
saves her 4 year old little boy,
Jeremy from a dog attack.

the first pitch for her hometown team.

7. AMC oncologist Dr. Ann
Hohenhaus wins prestigious
DeBakey Award for Excellence in
Journalism.

AMC cardiologist Dr. Philip Fox
presents feline hypertrophic
cardiomyopathy research at the
Winn Feline Foundation
Symposium.

8. For the 7th year in a row, the AMC Doggy Dash gave a dog and human team
the chance to compete in tandem over a 5 mile course through Central Park
as part of the NYC Triathlon. Twenty-nine dogs participated and were
examined before, during and after the race by seven AMC veterinarians and
four AMC veterinary technicians.

9. The Cat Tracker
project, a crowd
sourced research
project, studies the
roaming patterns of
domestic cats using
GPS technology. It
turns out most cats
don’t go too far from
home.

10. Researchers at Cal Tech
and UCLA discover the
human brain is hard-wired to
respond positively to
animals of all types,
explaining why Americans
have nearly 200 million pets.

Bentley, the Cavalier
King Charles Spaniel, is
quarantined after he is
exposed to Ebola virus
by his owner, nurse
Nina Pham. Both
survive and are
jubilantly reunited the
following month.

AMC dentist Django Martel
receives a research grant
from the American Kennel
Club’s Canine Health
Foundation to evaluate a new
treatment for periodontal
disease in dogs.

13. At The AMC’s
annual Top Dog
Gala, Swoosh a
therapy dog, and
Dyngo, a military
working dog, are
honored for their
service.
