• Tapah svadhyaya ishvara-pranidhana kriya-
yogah
– Kriya yoga consists of intensive self-discipline,
introspective self-analysis and surrender to the
Universal Will after doing one's best. 2.1

– [Kriya yoga enables one]to attenuate the
afflictions and attain higher states of absorption.

vicchinna udaranam
– The afflictions exist in dormant, attenuated, manifest
or overpowering states depending on the basic field of
ignorance. 2.4
• Antiya ashuchi duhkha anatmasu nitya shuchi
sukha atman khyatih avidya
– Ignorance is confusing the impermanent to be
permanent, the impure to be pure, the painful to be
pleasurable and the non-self to be the true Self. 2.5
• Drig darshana shaktyoh ekatmata iva asmita
– The ego arises from a misidentification with the tool
of perception. 2.6
8. • Sukha anushayi ragah
– Attraction is caused by the craving for pleasure. 2.7
• Duhkha anushayi dvesha
– Repulsion occurs due to fear of painful suffering. 2.8
• Svarasavahi vidushah api tatha rudhah
abhiniveshah
– The desire to survive is self propelled and found in
even the most learned of humans. 2.9
9. How to rid the Kleshas
• Te pratipasava heyah sukshmah
– One must go against the very subtle source of
these afflictions [if they are to be eradicated]. 2.10
• Dhyana heyah tat vrittayah
– Fluctuations of the klesha can be silenced through
meditative awareness. 2.11

10. They are the root of Karma
• Klesha-mula karma-ashaya drishta adrishta janma
vedaniyah
– With these afflictions as the root, karmic bondage
manifests through perceived and un-perceived
experiences of the present and future incarnations. 2.12
• Sati mule tat vipakah jatyayur bhogah
– As long as they remain, consequences produced are: birth,
life span, and experiences in that life. 2.13
• Te hlada paritapa phalah punya apunya hetutvat
– By the nature of merits or demerits (virtue or vice), these
may be experienced as either pleasure or pain. 2.14
