 What is e-learning?
 Internet vs web
 WEB 1.0 / 2.0 / 3.0
 E-LEARNING
• E-Learning 1.0 / 2.0
• Learning Management systems
• Types of e-Learning
• E-Learning approaches
What is e-learning?
E-learning is :
The use of various technological tools that are either
web-based, web-distributed or web-capable for the
purpose of education.
(Nichols, 2003, emphasis is mine)
The delivery of a learning, training or education
program by electronic means. E-learning involves the
use of a computer or electronic device (e.g. a mobile
phone) in some way to provide training, educational or
learning material in or out of the classroom.
(Derek Stockley 2003, emphasis is mine)
What is e-learning?
Fully e-learningNo e-learning
Distance educationMixed mode
(face-to-face + e-learning)
Classroom aidsFace-to-face
Blended learning
Distributed learning
The continuum of e-learning in formal education (Bates and Poole,
2003)
How to decide?
There are four factors that should determine what kind of course you should be teaching:
 your teaching philosophy
 the kind of students you are trying to reach (or will have to teach)
 the requirements of the subject discipline
 the resources available to you.
(Bates, 2012)
So why do we
need to know all
this?
 Since the year 2000 the e-learning market has risen
900%
 Nowadays, there are over 19 millions online
students, and over 70% of the students said that
they have enjoyed e-learning.
 E-Learning is a 50 billion dollar market which is
expected to rise to 107 billion by the year 2015, and
by the year 2019 50% of teaching will
be online

Where
can e-learning
take place?
 Non-Network – Based
 Computer – based learning
 Mobile learning
 Network-Based
 Internet-based learning
 Web-based learning
(Buzzetto-More, 2007)
Internet versus web
Internet
The Internet is a massive network of
networks, or networking infrastructure
Types: LAN / WAN / MAN
Protocols: HTTP / FTP / SMTP
World Wide Web
The web is just a collection of web
pages.
A way of accessing and sharing
information over the medium of
internet.
Languages: ASP / PHP / HTML / CSS
LAN LAN LAN
WAN Hyperlinks
Websites
(Robbins, 2012)
Version of the web
Web 1.0
Static
The web
Read only web
Information sharing
Connect information
Static content
One way publishing
Personal websites
Web 2.0
Interactive
The social web

E-learning 2.0
Characteristics
 Multidirectional
 Content as conversation
 Peer to peer
 Multiple channels (combination of
formal and informal)
Learning Management Systems

Types of e-learning
Asynchronous
 Communication is not in real time
 different time - different place
 Flexible
 learners view information & respond at
different times & from different places
Synchronous
 Communication is in real time
 same time - different place
 learners view content at the same
time
 Not flexible
 responses are immediate
 learners must meet at the same time.
E-mail – wiki – Discussion forums- videos Live Chat - online conferencing
(Ghirardini, 2011)
E.g.
E-Learning Approaches
Instructor-led E-Learning
Teacher/ instructor
 Provides assistance and set deadlines.
Learners
 Need to finish assignments and
activities before deadlines.
The more capable learners may feel bored or
frustrated.
The less capable learners may feel lost and
overwhelmed.
Self-Paced E-Learning
Teacher/ instructor
 A guide and facilitator of learning.
Learners
 Free to make many decisions about
when, where, what and how quickly
to learn.
