• The suffix “-dipsia” means thirst.
• It can be combined with prefixes to indicate a certain
condition e.g: polydipsia (excessive thirst)
3. -dipsia
• We intake water by
drinking liquids and
eating solid foods. But
the body outputs water
in different ways:
sweat, urine, skin and
lungs, etc.
4. -dipsia
• Osmolarity is the tonicity
of the body fluids and a
small raise in the
osmolarity can trigger
thirst and the release of
ADH (anti diuretic
hormone).
• The pituitary gland
controls thirst and a
change in 2-3% of
plasma osmolarity can
trigger thirst.
5. -crine
• “-crine” is a suffix that
is related with
secretion. It can be
combined with other
prefixes e.g: endocrine
(secretion to the blood
stream), exocrine
(secretion to the
outside).

• The exocrine system is
composed of: sweat
glands, mammary
glands, salivary
glands, sebaceous
glands, prostate
gland, pancreas, etc.
• Some functions of the
exocrine system are:
protection, lubrication, n
utrition, and digestion.

• The endocrine system is
composed of several
glands: pineal
gland, pituitary
gland, thyroid
gland, adrenal
glands, testes, ovaries, e
tc.
• The function of the
endocrine system is to
regulate homeostasis of
the body and assisting in
special occasions
(birth, puberty, etc.)
8. -crine
• The endocrine system
secretes hormones
that are released into
the bloodstream.
These hormones have
target organs and they
will affect the activity of
these organs to
regulate homeostasis.
