Gaining insights from trajectory datasets is a challenging task that requires suitable visual data representations. There is a considerable gap between the state of the art cartographic techniques presented in the literature and currently available spatial data science toolboxes. This talk presents the current state of geospatial visualization tools for trajectory data, focusing on the Python and Jupyter notebooks ecosystem. The identified shortcomings provide pointers for further scientific software development, as well as a reference for data scientists that helps to pick the best fitting tool for a specific job.

The potential of Big Data for understanding human mobility patterns and other complex phenomena in transportation and movement research is significant. Many contemporary Big Data sources have clear spatiotemporal dimensions. However, Big Spatiotemporal Data is usually messy and presents numerous challenges to researchers and analysts trying to extract information and knowledge. Exploratory data analysis tools for massive movement data are necessary to gain an understanding of our data, its biases and messiness and how they might affect our analyses. This talk presents methods for the exploration of movement patterns in massive quasi-continuous GPS tracking datasets, with examples focusing on international maritime vessel movements.

Presentation of arxiv preprint https://arxiv.org/abs/2006.16900 Mobility data science lacks common data structures and analytical functions. This position paper assesses the current status and open issues towards a universal API for mobility data science. In particular, we look at standardization efforts revolving around the OGC Moving Features standard which, so far, has not attracted much attention within the mobility data science community. We discuss the hurdles any universal API for movement data has to overcome and propose key steps of a roadmap that would provide the foundation for the development of this API.

Paper presented at LBS2019 Abstract: Location-based services in the maritime domain aim to improve efficiency and safety of vessel operations. Predictive functionality can increase the value of these services beyond ordinary visualizations of the current operational picture. Trajectory prediction aims to forecast the future path of vessels and can thus help improve logistics as well as help predict potentially dangerous situations. This paper presents ongoing work on data-driven trajectory prediction that leverages information of past vessel movements to improve prediction results. Preliminary results show that data-driven prediction outperforms baseline approaches, particularly in complex situations. However, results also show a large spatial variability in prediction performance. This indicates that it is impossible to compare the performance of different prediction methods by relying solely on the error statistics reported in publications since every research group uses different data samples from different geographic regions.

This talk presents MovingPandas, a new Python library for dealing with movement data. Movement data analysis is a high-interest topic in many different scientific domains. Even though Python is the scripting language of choice for many analysts, there is no Python library available so far that would enable researchers and practitioners to interact with and analyze movement data efficiently. MovingPandas development is based on an analysis of state-of-the-art conceptual frameworks and existing implementations (in PostGIS, Hermes, and the R package trajectories). We describe how MovingPandas avoids limitations of SimpleFeature based movement data models commonly used in the GIS (geographic information systems) world. Finally, we present the current state of the MovingPandas implementation and demonstrate its use in stand-alone Python scripts, as well as within the context of the desktop GIS application QGIS. This work represents the first steps towards a general-purpose Python library that enables researchers and practitioners in the GIS field and beyond to handle and analyze movement data more efficiently.

Pedestrian navigation systems available today still use paradigms developed for car navigation. We present a novel landmark-based pedestrian navigation model using only OpenStreetMap data, which is open and available globally. This approach ensures that our landmark navigation model is widely applicable, rather than restricted to a certain area with exceptional data sources. Our contributions cover algorithms for extraction, weighing, and selection of landmarks based on their suitability, as well as the generation of landmark-based navigation instructions for pedestrian routes. Initial tests with pedestrians show promising results by confirming that our weighted landmark selection reduces the number of navigation errors and revealing future challenges for the generation of intuitive pedestrian navigation instructions.

Paper: http://hw.oeaw.ac.at/0xc1aa500e%200x00324afb.pdf Abstract: Navigation instructions in pre- and on-trip routing services are usually based on street names and types, distances, and turn directions. However, in digital street graphs it is common that street names for separately mapped pedestrian and cycle links are missing. This leads to unsatisfactory instructions containing “unknown road” records. Often, these unnamed links run parallel to a named road, and it would be beneficial to use this information to generate instructions similar to “follow the sidewalk along Street A”, whereby “Street A” has to be determined by an algorithm. This paper introduces the Unnamed Link Naming Problem (ULNP) and presents a new approach to automatically extract suitable names to describe separately mapped pedestrian and cycle links. The approach has been tested using OpenStreetMap data and manually generated ground truth data for the second district of the city of Vienna, Austria. Results show that our best method achieves 90.7% correct matches in this challenging setting.
