Everyone approaches leadership in a unique manner. Their approach differs from situation to situation along with their overall leadership style. Some are born with it and others pick it up along the way. Each experience inextricably affects your personality, thinking and biases as you mature and evolve as a leader. Here are some of the lessons that my experiences have taught me.
1. Transformation To ADisruptive Leadership Style
Everyone approaches leadership in a unique manner. Their approach differs from situation to
situation along with their overall leadership style. Some are born with it and others pick it up
along the way. Each experience inextricably affects your personality, thinking and biases as you
mature and evolve as a leader. Here are some of the lessons that my experiences have taught
me.
Pulse on New Age Tech
New technologies, techniques and standards are constantly being released such as artificial
intelligence, cognitive behaviour, analytics etc. It can be a challenge to stay on top of the
changes, especially when they directly impact your work. Instead of chasing fads or trends, set
aside time to ensure you don't fall behind on essential learnings.
Hire Smart Leaders
Your most valuable assets are the people you hire and work with. In the pursuit of improvement,
keep an open mind to people with differing opinions and ideas. By surrounding yourself with
talented people with diverse skills, knowledge and understanding; you will be challenged to
keep growing.
Carpe Diem
If you would like to stay a step ahead of others, look beyond your KRAs. Knowing your
colleague's responsibilities and pushing yourself out of your comfort zone is a great way to grow
personally and professionally.
Discover Mindfulness
“True wisdom is knowing what you don't know,” said Confucius. Subconsciously, people know
the when and why’s of their actions but are often not able to explain it on a conscious level. To
be a leader, it is important to have that level of awareness so that you can teach someone
facing those problems. If I am good with numbers, I could recall the courses that allowed me to
develop my abilities. It’s a conscious effort to be mindful, accepting, nonjudgmental and
encourage it in others. Engage a theme and, even if your team are erring, let them learn from
their mistakes. Instead of handholding your team, teach them to be mindful.
Charm Your Audience
Long ago, I realised public speaking is a quality a leader must possess. If you wish to be a good
leader and communicator, practise your speech patterns and talking to others in ever larger
groups. While talking to a room full of people, aim to understand the vibe of the audience and
hold their attention, switching tracks when you feel it wane. Over time, it becomes easier to be
confident in front of a crowd or give an effective presentation.
No Procrastination: Take Instant Action
One of the leadership challenges many people face is not being able to articulate their thoughts
well enough. A project can even fail if the team isn’t on the same page. As a leader, work on
your communication skills to set a direction for your team, build a vision and drive innovation.
The above practises and skills take a lifetime to hone and require constant revisits. You will
most likely not be able to immediately inspire respect and confidence in those who follow you.
But there is no time like the present, so prioritise and apply consistent effort for change to take
2. place. If you think you need to engage better or improve, start working on it now and you will
begin to see incredible changes to your leadership style a few years down the line.
