María Blasco

Blasco ’s LIFE
 She was born in Alicante in 1965.
 She graduated in Biological sciences from the
Autonomous University in Madrid.
 She obtained a doctorate at the Severo Ochoa Biology
Molecular centre under the tutelage of Margarita Salas.

Blasco decided to move to the United States in order to be in
touch with the most advanced science.
There she obtained a postdoctoral fellowship at the Cold Spring
Harbour Laboratory of Dr. Carol Greider from 1993 to 1997.
There she investigated the telomeres, the ends of the
chromosomes of the cells.

In 1997 she returned to Madrid and began to work as a scientist.
She was appointed group leader in the Department of Immunology
and Oncology of the CSIC.
In 2003 she joined the National Cancer Research Centre (CNIO).
In 2013 she was appointed director of the CNIO.

HER TRIUMPHS IN MOLECULAR BIOLOGY
The results on her research showed that the role played by
telomerase was closely associated to aging and serious illnesses
such as cancer.

She has published some articles on the importance of telomerase.

OBJECTIVES PROPOSED BY BLASCO
There are three objectives proposed by Blasco:
1)Investigate the causes of cell aging.
2)Disseminate the knowledge of science.
3)Fight to ensure that women have the right to equal
profesional opportunities.

HONOURS AND AWARDS
.Blasco is the first woman scientist to obtain the Josef Steiner
Award for cancer research in 2003.
.She obtained the Severo Ochoa award in molecular biology in
2005, the Körber European Science award in 2008 and the Miguel
Catalan Career Achievement Award in 2016 among others.
.She was appointed fellow of the Royal Academy of Pharmacy of
Spain in 2013.
