2. Introduction For my media product I decided that I wanted to make a teaser trailer. Initially I wanted to make a teaser trailer for a romantic dance movie, but after filming I realised that it would be hard to try and film some of the dance sequences. A lot of the dance trailers that I saw had many camera angles to show the full capacity of the dances, I found it hard to do this. So in the end I decided to make a teaser for a romantic movie. Recently there has been a shortage of romantic movies being made, I think this is due to the rise of the rom-com. Romantic comedy is a merge of the genre comedy and also romantic. The reason why rom-com are on the rise is because they reach out to a more larger audience where romance is a niche genre as it is mostly viewed by woman.
3. In what way does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of your media product On my BlogSpot I stated exactly what is expected in a teaser trailer. http://c-g-m-r-j.blogspot.com/2010/01/teaser-trailer-whats-thaat-s.html Initially when I started making my teaser I had an idea that I wanted it all to be based around one scene from the movie, instead of what you normally see which is a series of short clips from the entire movie. This idea came from watching the teaser trailer for dark knight. In this teaser there is no clips only voice over's. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UWw0ov-cAUg
4. After watching the teaser for dark knight I realised that I wanted my teaser to be very simple, I didn’t want it to give the audience to much away. By making my teaser minimal I think that it creates a larger hype to the release of my product. After looking at the dark knight teaser I decided to look at fan made teasers. The reason behind this is because they captured the essence of what I wanted my teaser to look like. They followed the same narrative that I wanted for my trailer. Also the fact that I didn't want to have diegetic sound in my, I got from watching fan made teasers. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AsghUBi81qY http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gDVlQPpVUA8 This is two of the teasers that I looked at and got the idea to not have dialogue in my teaser. I think that from watching both teasers you can see that it has a bigger impact than a trailer with a lot of dialogue. At first my movie was going to be mainstream meaning that my products were for a larger target audience, but as I continued researching into products I realised that my work reached a more niche audience, and so I decided that I wanted my product to be an indie label movie.
5. Conventions The codes that I am using, in order to signify meaning to my audience, is the use of the black and white film stock. This signifies poignancy, stripped back truth and melancholy. The music is another way in which we signify–the mood or tone it creates is serious and is reflective to the romantic genre. I think that in romantic trailers the music is used to signify the mood. The music that I used is synchronous to the moving image as the cuts between each shots are quite slow, and the music is also slow and very calming.
6. Conventions Posters This is an example of an indie movie, movie poster. As you can see this is similar to my product as the main focus is on the picture, in which we are introduced to the characters. This movie poster doesn’t have all the information at the bottom that tells your about who was involved in the making of the movie. It simply has the tagline and also the title. As you can see this is similar to my poster which I wanted to be focusing more on the story that is being created from the image. So i think that poster follows the norm what you would expect from a indie movie poster.
7. Conventions I also looked into the more mainstream movie posters. These posters had more information on them as they were not just advertising the movie, but also the actors and the main people involved in the production of the movie. As you can see from the notebook movie poster.
8. Conventions My magazine cover followed the typical guidelines to a normal high-end movie magazine. When I was making my cover I wanted to capture the same feel as the empire magazine cover featuring Megan Foxx . From looking at many magazine covers I realised that most magazine covers tend to have male characters as their main image, and tend to be images from the movie or the characters in costume. When they have female characters they tend to be styled more seductively. I think this goes to show that movie magazines are mostly read from male. The colour scheme that I used is similar to the one used in the Megan Foxx empire edition as the colour is a connotation for sex.
9. How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts I think that my ancillary task have helped to advertise my trailer. Especially with the magazine cover as it is a way of getting the opposite sex to watch the movie. By having the main female character looking glamorous on the cover it not only gets attention from males, but also females. Also the poster does well not to give away to much of the plot, this creates a hype for the movie. I got the idea for the poster from the Dark Knight poster. In this poster the character also has their back turned to the audience, this creates suspense and I think is a great way of grabbing the audience. My ancillary task also does well at advertising the main female characters, as she the only image seen in both the poster and magazine cover.
10. 3 is the magic number This is the package for the transformers movie. As you can see from the magazine cover they are advertising Megan Foxx as this sexy character in which will get people interested in the movie that she is starring in.
12. What have you learned from audience feedback Audience are very important when it comes to making a product as it is aimed to them. My target audience was more a niche market. I wanted mostly female who watched indie films which is quite a hard audience to target so it was important for me to have their opinions. Do you think my teaser gave away to much of the storyline. Yes-7 No-0
13. Do you think that the all the products helped to sell the movie?Yes-9No-1
16. If you answered no which of the following reason would you say it was because of? I didn’t get much from the trailer? The poster didn’t capture me? I don't’ know
17. How did you use new media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages? During every stage of creating my product I used different types of technologies. RESEARCH During the first stages of making my products I had to do research. The way in which I showed proof of my research is BlogSpot. BlogSpot is a blog in which you write what you have been researching. Also on BlogSpot allowed us to upload pictures and also embed videos from YouTube, or post their links. http://www.c-g-m-r-j.blogspot.com/
18. Technology YouTube.. http://www.youtube.com/ Another technology that I used a lot of was YouTube. This is where I went to find most of my teaser trailers in which I used to analyse. Photoshop. I used Photoshop to edit my magazine cover, and also my movie poster. On Photoshop there are many applications that allow you to alter images and add different layers to your image.
19. Technologies Imovie I used Imovie on the Mac computers to edit my teaser trailer. Imovie allowed me to edit the clips that I have filmed. On Imovie I was able to alter my teaser to make it black and white. Canon (camera) In order to make my images a good quality I decided to use a Canon camera, this is because it has a high megapixel, and also a good optical zoom
20. Technologies Garageband Garageband is a free website that allows you to download music without copyright for free, this is where I found the music for teaser. Garageband allows you to search for music through the genre of music you want. http://www.garageband.com/charts/folk/current.html?|pe1|S9ncJmn4vPT-JFy1Yw
21. Technology Sony Digital video camera I used the Sony digital camera to capture the footage for my teaser trailer. These cameras allowed me to get immediate playback.
