3. Lap napkins if required
– from the right-hand side, remove the
napkin that has been provided as part
of the setting and unfold it. Re-fold it
into a triangular shape and drape it
across the guest’s lap, pointed side
facing away from them.
4. Note
that some guests will prefer to place
their own napkin, so be aware of the
guest’s body language at all times, and
certainly don’t force this service on
anyone. A comment such as “Excuse
me, sir”
5. Seat and lap the
guests
Help the customers get seated
and lap them from the right-
hand side. Lapping means:
unfold the napkin
refold it into a triangle
hold it on one corner and place
it across the customer’s lap.
6. Procedures
1. Pick up napkin from the table · After all the
guest have seated · Say, “Excuse me,
Sir/Madam!”
2. Open the napkin · Unfold it from the right of
the guest where possible · Unfold it to its original
size (Square) · Fold the napkin along the
diagonal to form a triangle
7. 3. Place the napkin on the guest’s lap · With
care and caution · From the right side of the
guest where possible ·
The apex of the triangle should be away
from the guest · Say, “Excuse me,
Sir/Madam!” once putting napkin down ·
Ensure that you don’t touch a guest

rest of the guest
8. Activity: Unfolding Napkin
1. Prepare your napkin or handkerchief.
2. Choose your favorite napkin folding style and
start folding.
3. Place it on your table.
4. Ask someone to be your guest. How will you
open the napkin cloth (demonstrate)?
5. Rate your performance. Ask someone to rate
your performance.
