 A quarter at a time
 Pretests are crucial
 Can exempt students from lessons
 Off-line activities are required

Plato 101

  1. This PPT serves as an overview to Plato. It is geared to support the new Plato instructor.
  2. Elective courses offered through Plato are cool. Please take a look at the elective courses offered by Plato under “Plato Content.”I use plato for a lot of math. I teach Algebra Readiness as direct instruction. Kids who are above that math class are assigned work in Plato.Credit recovery (CR) is different from the above. Think of credit recovery as a “night class” where kids work on their coursework at home after regular school hours. Kids can earn credits above and beyond what we offer on a quarterly basis. There is specific criteria which teachers must follow for CR. Please contact me for specifics.
  3. It is a good idea to log-in to a Plato course as a student so you will have a better understanding of what students will see. Remember, you can assign an entire semester’s worth of work to a student (for 5.0 credits) or you can assign quarterly work (for 2.5 credits). I find that students are more likely to complete their online course work when it is chunked by quarters.
  4. A great feature of Plato is the ability for students to “exempt” from lessons. A student must take a pretest at the beginning of each course. If students show mastery of a particular topic in Plato, they can be exempted from that lesson in the course. Why have students learn information they have already mastered?Off-line activities are short activities (usually 2 pages) students print on paper and complete by hand. Off-line activities are required and are graded by the instructor. For those who teach at a Contracted Learning site, these offline activities can also be used as work samples.Credit recovery (CR) is a special circumstance. Contact me if you have a student who is taking a Plato course for CR. I will guide you through that quick process.
