White light scanning is a 3D digitizing technology that measures the physical characteristics of an object with an optical measuring system.<br />
3D white light scanning is the most accurate process for taking the dimensional measurements of an object and then modeling in 3D digitally. It has been improved on with the advances in computing power.<br />
The process of 3D white light digitizing is very complicated. White light scanners use measurements such as fringe contrast, frequency domain analysis, and fourier analysis to create a model. White light scanning uses imaging interferometers to measure optical path difference.<br />
The scanner sends multiple lights towards an object. As multiple scanner lights hit the object, "interference" occurs between the lights. The difference between the lights is measured and the scanner is able to formulate digital coordinates of the object .<br />
The white light scanner compares millions of points on an object, so it is a very precise representation. The data is stored and acts as a 3D model which can be utilized in CAD software. <br />
