Question one- evaluation
• Establishing shot of the building and the main character looking at the house. The camera
goes high to low, stops at the main character.
• Shows the setting of her new home. Also indicates that she is moving in.
• Starts with the title and the black screen with the title type written with the appropriate
sound to go with it.
• Non diegetic sound when the title appears- typing sounds on a typewriter with an addition of
dramatic hard non diegetic sound- this gives a sense of the genre.
• Starts with the title and the black screen with the title type written with the appropriate
sound to go with it.
• Howling wind- non- diegetic – establishing shot, adding emphasis to the scene.
• Extreme close shot of the main characters feet
walking up the stairs.
• Shows that the girl is being curious and
exploring the house- Todorov: linear narrative
structure (conventional).
• Diegetic sound when walking up the stairs
foreshadows a new discovery.
• Close shot of the characters hands and the
adoptions form.
• Jump cut to the adoption papers- explains her
situation.
• This lets the audience know that she had been
adopted. This is an action code.
• Diegetic sound of rustling of paper- these
papers are significant to the film.
• Medium shot of the door while the foster parent answers the door.
• This illustrates that the mother is trying to build a bond with her new foster child.
• Diegetic sound- rings the bell- new character is introduced.
• Diegetic- dialogue (foster mother)
• Jump cuts her first day at the new house. There is also a date inserted on the front because
dates are to show that this has happened over a long period of time. Then jump cuts to the
bell this adds tension also because of the foster mother.
• Medium shot of the foster parent putting the
necklace over the girl’s neck.
• Shows the curiosity of the child.
• A close up of the photo frame of the foster mother and girl.
• This may foreshadow that there is a past that may arise problems in the future for
the main character.
• Non- diegetic sound- piano- photo frame and continues when sleeping- photo
frame is an iconic object.
• Jump cuts straight to the photo frame with the mother and another person- adds
confusion but also more to the story.
• Long shot of ghost girl on a log in her dream.
• This signifies that she is having nightmares, this also may foreshadows that
something may happen in the near future.
• Diegetic sound- wind howling in the dream and also birds singing (non-diegetic) -
make the scene more tensing.
• Dissolves into the dream sequence, where there is also a vignette added to add to
the effect that it is a dream- there is a slight colour change to signify that it is a
nightmare.
• The girl walking towards the ghost is in focus and the ghost girl is out of focus.
• This continues adding tension because the audience is waiting to see the ghost
and how.
• Diegetic sound- wind howling in the dream and also birds singing (non-diegetic) -
make the scene more tensing.
• Dissolves into the dream sequence, where there is also a vignette added to add to
the effect that it is a dream- there is a slight colour change to signify that it is a
nightmare.
• A medium shot on the side of the main
character reaching out for the ghosts
shoulder.
• This continues with the tension
• Diegetic sound- wind howling in the dream
and also birds singing (non-diegetic) - make
the scene more tensing.
• A close shot of the girl walking off while the ghost is behind her in the distance out
of focus.
• This shows that the ghost is following her in real life as well as dreams.
• The scene includes the main character in focus while the ghost is not in focus- this
also adds tension that something is following her. Also there is a freeze frame of
the ghost because this is emphasised to ensure that the readers understand that a
spirit is following her.
• Extreme close shot of the girl’s face looking on
her side while she slowly looks back.
• It illustrates the anxiety and the emotions that
is going through her at that very moment.
• Intense low sound due to the sight of ghost
behind.
• A hand held camera blurry and out of focus shot behind her.
• This portrays that she may be seeing things and the blurriness and shaking shows
something may have happened to her.
• Diegetic sound- sirens in the background.
• The jump cut from the reflection to the close shot of her on the side illustrates
that she is really worried that the same ghost that was trying to communicate with
her was also following her in real life. This then dissolves into the hand held view
of the main character looking back- it is done in slow motion and out of focus to
relate to the emotions running through her at that very moment.
• She at is lower than the audience therefore signifies that something dramatic may
happen.
• Non- Diegetic sound of the bang at the wardrobe- very loud for a bigger impact.
• Halo/ heavenly sound when she gets up to open the door- this adds tension to the
scene.
• Dissolves to another scene where she is in her bedroom and she hears a loud bang
from her wardrobe there is an hump cut aerial head shot of her walking towards
the wardrobe- this was added to put the audience in her position, but also in
correlation to the non- diegetic sound this foreshadows something dramatic and
tense is going to happen.
• Medium- long shot of the ghost in the wardrobe and the girl turned to her
right side to answer to her foster mother that interfered at this point.
• When she opens the wardrobe, there is dialogue and tense music too.
• This shows that the foster mother knows when the ghost tries and makes
contact with her foster daughter and she prevents this from occurring.
• A close up shot of the ghost girl behind while
trying to reach her arm out to the main
character.
• This shows that the ghost is coming after her
• A hand held camera of the main character running away from the ghost.
• This allows the audience to relate to her situation and therefore adds tension to
the scene.
• Diegetic sound of the forest and mixture of howling sound plus the diegetic heavy
breathing.
• Dissolves again to her sleeping in her bed and dissolves in to her dream. The scene
where she is running away from the ghost is hand held view and she is scared by
the ghost that appears in front of her. Motivated cut to iconic object (necklace)
and back to real life. Where foster mother reappears.
• A close up shot of the ghost when she turns around.
• This close up scares the audience because through the film the ghost girl’s
appearance has been kept hidden and when the atmosphere is tense on purpose.
• Diegetic sound of the forest and mixture of howling sound plus the diegetic heavy
breathing.
• When she turns around to find the ghost- howling sounds with the diegetic sounds
with it e.g. sirens.
• Arial medium shot of the girl picking up the necklace from the floor.
• This raises some questions as who brought the necklace back to her.
• When she finds the necklace on the floor in her bedroom the halo music is
added to make it more tense and suspicious.
• Dissolves into another scene where she rediscovers the necklace on her
bedroom floor. Where it jump cuts to the ghost shortly reappearing in the
mirror and over shoulder shot of her speaking to the girl.
• Close up shot of the reflection of the ghost girl behind the main character due to
the necklaces presence.
• This is added to scare the audience. Also to mention that she won’t leave till she
has said what she wanted to say.
• More upbeat diegetic sounds have been added when the ghost appears behind
her in the mirror- this makes it scarier.
• Over the head long shot of the main character asking the ghost who she is X3 (shot
reverse shot)
• Medium over the shoulder shot of the main girl talking X3 (shot reverse shot)
• Conversation occurring.
• When the ghost and the girl have the conversation the sound in the back ground is
diegetic of the birds tweeting.
• Dissolves back to the dream- shot reverse shot of their conversation.
• Medium- long shot of both the characters sit on the log talking to
each other.
• Close shot of the necklace on the main character.
• This is where they have started to bond and speak properly.
• Again the emphasis of the iconic object.
• When there is a zoom in to the other iconic object (the frame)
there is a more upbeat intense sound inserted.
• When the girl is shocked by the photo frame she is given,
there is a jump shot of the close up shot of the frame.
• Close up of the main character awake in her bed and the foster parent
next to her.
• A pan up to her face while she moves her head to look and finds her
smiling.
• Iconic- emphasis of the photo.
• This shows that the foster parent is stopping communication between the
ghost- this finally reveals that the foster mother is behind the weird things
that have occurred. Propps- false hero just like insidious where the dad is
the false hero when actually he killed Elise.
• This adds to the tension with a cliff hanger hanger at the end because she
has almost revealed it with the smile; like she has sensed everything that
has happened.

  • 11. • A close shot of the girl walking off while the ghost is behind her in the distance out of focus. • This shows that the ghost is following her in real life as well as dreams. • The scene includes the main character in focus while the ghost is not in focus- this also adds tension that something is following her. Also there is a freeze frame of the ghost because this is emphasised to ensure that the readers understand that a spirit is following her.
  • 12. • Extreme close shot of the girl’s face looking on her side while she slowly looks back. • It illustrates the anxiety and the emotions that is going through her at that very moment. • Intense low sound due to the sight of ghost behind.
  • 13. • A hand held camera blurry and out of focus shot behind her. • This portrays that she may be seeing things and the blurriness and shaking shows something may have happened to her. • Diegetic sound- sirens in the background. • The jump cut from the reflection to the close shot of her on the side illustrates that she is really worried that the same ghost that was trying to communicate with her was also following her in real life. This then dissolves into the hand held view of the main character looking back- it is done in slow motion and out of focus to relate to the emotions running through her at that very moment.
  • 14. • She at is lower than the audience therefore signifies that something dramatic may happen. • Non- Diegetic sound of the bang at the wardrobe- very loud for a bigger impact. • Halo/ heavenly sound when she gets up to open the door- this adds tension to the scene. • Dissolves to another scene where she is in her bedroom and she hears a loud bang from her wardrobe there is an hump cut aerial head shot of her walking towards the wardrobe- this was added to put the audience in her position, but also in correlation to the non- diegetic sound this foreshadows something dramatic and tense is going to happen.
  • 15. • Medium- long shot of the ghost in the wardrobe and the girl turned to her right side to answer to her foster mother that interfered at this point. • When she opens the wardrobe, there is dialogue and tense music too. • This shows that the foster mother knows when the ghost tries and makes contact with her foster daughter and she prevents this from occurring.
  • 16. • A close up shot of the ghost girl behind while trying to reach her arm out to the main character. • This shows that the ghost is coming after her
  • 17. • A hand held camera of the main character running away from the ghost. • This allows the audience to relate to her situation and therefore adds tension to the scene. • Diegetic sound of the forest and mixture of howling sound plus the diegetic heavy breathing. • Dissolves again to her sleeping in her bed and dissolves in to her dream. The scene where she is running away from the ghost is hand held view and she is scared by the ghost that appears in front of her. Motivated cut to iconic object (necklace) and back to real life. Where foster mother reappears.
  • 18. • A close up shot of the ghost when she turns around. • This close up scares the audience because through the film the ghost girl’s appearance has been kept hidden and when the atmosphere is tense on purpose. • Diegetic sound of the forest and mixture of howling sound plus the diegetic heavy breathing. • When she turns around to find the ghost- howling sounds with the diegetic sounds with it e.g. sirens.
  • 19. • Arial medium shot of the girl picking up the necklace from the floor. • This raises some questions as who brought the necklace back to her. • When she finds the necklace on the floor in her bedroom the halo music is added to make it more tense and suspicious. • Dissolves into another scene where she rediscovers the necklace on her bedroom floor. Where it jump cuts to the ghost shortly reappearing in the mirror and over shoulder shot of her speaking to the girl.
  • 20. • Close up shot of the reflection of the ghost girl behind the main character due to the necklaces presence. • This is added to scare the audience. Also to mention that she won’t leave till she has said what she wanted to say. • More upbeat diegetic sounds have been added when the ghost appears behind her in the mirror- this makes it scarier.
  • 21. • Over the head long shot of the main character asking the ghost who she is X3 (shot reverse shot) • Medium over the shoulder shot of the main girl talking X3 (shot reverse shot) • Conversation occurring. • When the ghost and the girl have the conversation the sound in the back ground is diegetic of the birds tweeting. • Dissolves back to the dream- shot reverse shot of their conversation.
  • 22. • Medium- long shot of both the characters sit on the log talking to each other. • Close shot of the necklace on the main character. • This is where they have started to bond and speak properly. • Again the emphasis of the iconic object. • When there is a zoom in to the other iconic object (the frame) there is a more upbeat intense sound inserted. • When the girl is shocked by the photo frame she is given, there is a jump shot of the close up shot of the frame.
  • 23. • Close up of the main character awake in her bed and the foster parent next to her. • A pan up to her face while she moves her head to look and finds her smiling. • Iconic- emphasis of the photo. • This shows that the foster parent is stopping communication between the ghost- this finally reveals that the foster mother is behind the weird things that have occurred. Propps- false hero just like insidious where the dad is the false hero when actually he killed Elise. • This adds to the tension with a cliff hanger hanger at the end because she has almost revealed it with the smile; like she has sensed everything that has happened.
