THE RELATION BETWEEN SOCIAL CAPITAL AND NUTRIENT
SUFFICIENCY DEGREE AND STATUS OF CHILDREN UNDER FIVE IN
FISHERMAN FAMILY IN SERVICE AREA OF OESAPA PUBLIC

Social capital is the ability of inhabitants in doing association (hubungan) one
another and then become important strength not only for economic life but also
other social aspects. Fisherman family, in general, is poorer than farmer or
craftsman family. Such condition of fisherman family, enable them to use their
social relation with other parties to support their food need. This research is
conducted to examine the relation between social capital and degree of nutrient
sufficiency and nutrient status of children under five in fisherman family in
service area of Oesapa Public Health Center. The kind of research is analytic
research with Cross Sectional Study design. The population of this research is
fisherman family who has children under five with age 6 months to 59 months in
service area of Oesapa Public Health Center, Kupang City. The amount of sample
is 70 families which taken using Systematic Random Sampling. The data is
analyzed using Chi-Square test. The result shows fisherman family is regarded as
big family (81, 43%), poor educated (62.86%) and low earned (51.43%). The
degree of energy sufficiency and protein sufficiency of children under five in
fisherman family are regarded good which are 62.86% and 97.14%. So the
nutrient status of children under five is regarded good (68.57%). There is no
relation between all social capital variables which examined with the degree of
protein sufficiency of children under five in fisherman family. Whereas, there is
relation between social capital are trust (p value = 0.000 and 0.000) and social
network like good relation with other family (p value = 0.000 and 0.000), the
amount of followed group (p value = 0.000 and 0.000), activeness (p value =
0.002 and 0.000) with energy sufficiency degree and nutrient status of children
under five.
