This document summarizes two papers that were presented at the International Conference on Advances & Challenges in Interdisciplinary Engineering and Management in 2017. The first paper proposes an adaptive protocol called Breath for industrial control applications using wireless sensor networks. Breath optimizes energy efficiency through randomized routing, medium access control, and duty-cycling while ensuring packet reliability and delay constraints. The second paper discusses the design of a device called Addiction Avoider that aims to entirely avoid addiction by controlling brain waves. It notes that about 80% of people are addicted to substances or behaviors.
