Questions
Sustainable buildings and efficient energy use
6. 6
The strengths and weaknesses of oil versus biomass are shown in Table 1.
1.1.- Heating
Oil Biomass
Transport The oil wells are thousands of kilometers far from
our highschool and the transport has a strong
impact on our planet.
The source of biomass is the countryside of Baeza and the
impact of transport is low.
Win
Green
house
effect
The biomass is a renewable source of energy based on the
photosynthesis carried out by trees and in this way there is a
harmony between production and comsumption of CO2
Biomass beats oil
Price The biomass is 50% cheaper than oil fuel
Storage
safety
The storage of oil require strong measures of
safety
Loose
There are no fumes at the storage room of biomass and no risk
of explosion.
In case of leak you can clean it with a broom
Win
Volume
required
for storage
Biomass requires double the amount of room for storage than
oil
Maintenna
nce
Win The biomass boiler needs a cleaning of the soot and ashes after
a few days of use (2 to 10) while oil boiler needs maintenance
only once a year.

1.2.1- Electricity from non renewable sources
• Cogeneration
•Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT)
•Coal

1.4.- Conclusions
• The use of water spends huge amounts of electricity
• 41% of the production of electricity is obtained from the burning of
fossile fuels and 15% from nuclear fission
•Heating by fuel burning produces much more greenhouse effect than
heating by using biomass
•Greenhouse gases are the main cause of global warming, draughts and
extremely hot Summers like we had this year. No snow in Canada this
year until 20th of December!
WE NEED TO REDUCE THE USE OF OIL BURNING, ELECTRICITY AND
WATER
Below we will see some ways of approaching a more sustainable life and
cultivating better habits

Thank you notes
I´d like to thank my coworkers in Highschool for all their support
I´d like to thank my students for their cooperation in leading highschool
to sustainability
I´d like to thank Professor Deen at McMaster University
without his support I wouldn´t be probably here talking to you
